The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of persons on the autism spectrum disorder. We envision a society where Filipinos on the spectrum become the best of their potentials -- self-reliant, independent, productive, socially-accepted citizens of an Autism-OK Philippines.

From a Father to a Mother... the Journey of Hope Continues.

During the 2007 election of ASP Trustees, Alfred Contreras was the lone father who made it to the magic 11 who would serve as Board Trustees from 2008-2009. A mother, Jacky Garcia was a close #12.

Alfred Contreras is an Industrial Engineer by training yet a property developer and manager by profession. Serving as a trustee, he provided valuable inputs gathered from his years of working as a software engineer.

“Aside from being a very dedicated father to his 6-year old Gio, one thing I admire of Fred is his work attitude. He gets things done. Basta my oras sya..gagawin nya kaagad.(As long as he has the time, he will really get into things). I experienced that when we worked together during the last ASP National Autism Conference,” says fellow former trustee Evert Malapad, ASP Metro-South President.

“A father is the pillar of every family and should lead the way in coping with their child with autism. The head of the family should inspire and serve as source of strength of the other members,” said Alfred during one of his interviews.

After serving as Trustee since 2006, he had to cut his second term for business concerns. Daddy Albert passes the torch to Jacqueline Garcia.

Fellow Cavitena, Jan Peña, Board Trustee and ASP Bacoor Chapter President shares: “It’s hard to handle a family, a teaching job in a public school, a center for special children, an ASP chapter, and a Board Trustee position all at same time! But despite her loaded schedule, Jackie is always supportively there where she is needed most! ASP Bacoor is really proud to have one empowered, model super-mom like her who gets fellow parents and professionals on the move for "the cause!"

Jackie is currently serving as the President-elect of soon to be inducted ASP Molino, our 38th Chapter. We gladly welcome her to the ASP Board of Trustee, serving from May until the end of this term this year.

ASP would like to thank old and new board of trustees for their continued commitment in serving families dealing with autism.

ASP Chapters Around the Country

ASP Official Logo
Autism Society Philippines’ Chapters provide support and services to families in provincial areas, specially the underprivileged. Majority of the chapters are now doing programs and services independently, such as: monthly seminars for members, family support group meetings, free therapies for children with autism (CWA), public autism awareness programs, and resource development.

It took ASP 14 years to organize 20 chapters. The numbers dramatically doubled in the last five years. ASP’s 50 chapters, still growing, are found in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Check out the ASP Chapters in your area.

ASP Welcomes New Board Member

Ms. Jacqueline Garcia with son Johnvid
"ASP’s newest addition to our Board of Trustee is Ms. Jacqueline C. Garcia. A woman of many hats, Jacky is the elected president of the soon-to-be inducted ASP Molino, Bacoor Chapter. A resident of Cavite, she runs a special education tutorial center in Camella, Bacoor, hoping to reach out to other children with autism like her son Johnvid, who is now 11 years old. Jacky is also a Physical Education teacher by profession at Claro M. Recto in Legarda Manila, an agriculturist, and a special education teacher. Tireless, she advocates for autism even during her family outings."

Teresa Herrera’s Mothers’ Day Gift for All Autism Angels

Teresa Herrera is the current host of the hit TV show, Project Runway Philippines. She is also an actress, model and creative visionary who has made her mark on the global stage with her elegance, style, passion, and wit. Her passions lie in the arts and takes inspirations from film, theatre, fashion, art, dance, globe-trotting, scuba diving and yoga. (source: my space)

During her photo shoot with one of the world's largest advertising agencies–Leo Burnett (watch out for this new Corporate Angel’s magnanimous contribution to our advocacy), she heard about the challenges of Filipino families dealing with autism. This prompted her to immediately reach out to us – through yoga. Click here to know more.

So, on May 9, 2009, at 8:30am, join Teresa Herrera’s yoga session to relax your mind and body. This is Teresa’s tribute to all mothers of children with autism. This activity is also open to all Autism Angels-mothers, fathers, lolos, lolas, siblings, teachers, therapists. NO FEES, 50 slots available on a first come first served basis, so we need you to pre-register by calling 926-6941 or 929-8447 or by emailing us at autismphil@pldtdsl.net or autismphils@gmail.com. The venue will be provided by another Corporate Angel – The Legend Villas. Click here for the location map.

May Activities

May 16 Family Support Group
May 16, 2009, Saturday, 1:00 - 5:00 PM
ASP Office, Room 307, ML Bldg., #47 Kamias Road, QC

Our FSG facilitator for the month of May is no other than Ms. Belina Regalado, the mom of Thristan Mendoza or better known as “Tum-Tum”, a world-class marimba musician.

“When Tum was still a kid, he hated video lights or any form of the shade of red. He could not bear the sounds of electric drills and food grinders. He didn’t like looking at the mirror. He has fascination over spinning objects such as electric fans and bicycle wheels. He needed a lot of prodding before he can join the other children.”

Tum made his presence felt in the music scene playing 3 musical instruments such as drums, cymbals and temple block. The same year, he was diagnosed with autism. By age 10, he performed a total of 120 shows with musicians around the world. Click here to see Tum’s performance during the 1st World Autism Awareness Day. (photo and text by Raph Torralba)

Listen as Belina speaks from her heart. Learn the experiences she faced in coping with all the struggles after her son was diagnosed with autism. Take home practical tips on parenting and how to advocate for your child with autism.

May 30 Back-to-Back Seminars
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
30 May 2009, Saturday, 9:00 am - 12:00 nn
Asian Social Institute, 1518 Leon Guinto cor. Escoda St., Malate Manila

The Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) approach teaches social, motor, and verbal behaviors as well as reasoning skills. ABA treatment is especially useful in teaching behaviors to children with autism who may otherwise not "pick up" these behaviors on their own as neuro-typical children would. The ABA approach can be used by a parent, counselor, or certified behavior analyst.

Communicating with Pictures
30 May 2009, Saturday, 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Asian Social Institute, 1518 Leon Guinto cor. Escoda St., Malate Manila

For people having difficulty using speech as a primary mode of communication within school, home or community settings, pictures can be a good tool to help facilitate communication. Learn how using pictures to communicate with children with autism can be an effective way to get the message across, and visa versa.
