"The ASP Artismo program believes in the power of art as a medium of self expression," shares Ms. Mona Magno-Veluz, ASP National President. "and it is something that we leverage in building a genuinely Autism-OK Philippines.

The ASP Artismo is the culture and arts platform of the Autism Society Philippines. It harnesses the beauty of art as a form of self-expression and elevates the skills of artists on the spectrum towards a creative vocation.

Autism Advocacy Leaders Celebrated at Angels Walk for Autism

The Autism Society Philippines (ASP), together with SM Cares, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of SM Prime Holdings, held the annual Angels Walk for Autism on March 3, at the Mall of Asia Arena. Since it began in 2007, the walk continues to advocate for acceptance, accommodation and appreciation of Filipinos with autism towards an Autism-OK Philippines.

The image shows 24,000 participants having a group photo during Angels Walk.
24,000 participants registered for Angels Walk for Autism 2019

Over 24,000 participants -- families, professionals, supporters from the government and private sectors, from the Philippines and overseas -- joined the annual walk from the MOA Arena to the SM MOA Music Hall. The walk was supported by the MOA Arena, SM Mall of Asia, National Council of Disability Affairs, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability, and the ASEAN Autism Network.

This year’s Angels Walk for Autism celebrated our country’s legacy of strong leaders that have brought the autism advocacy forward -- for the last 30 years, across 97 chapters, with 13,000 members -- and have become the foundation on which the next generation of leaders will build the future.

Here's a montage of photos of participants, some at the venue as early as 5:30 in the morning, getting ready to enjoy the day: http://bit.ly/2GfF1FN.

This year's pre-walk program elevated the role of persons with autism in our evolving advocacy. This was most prominent with the introduction of our first ever neuro-diverse co-hosts: Mr. Rhav Lomboy, a musician-athlete, working at COMELEC, and Ms. Pia Cabanero, a high school senior.

The pre-walk program was led by Ms. Dang Koe, ASP Chair Emeritus and the inaugural ASEAN Prize Laureate 2018. The ASEAN Prize aims to recognize inspiring achievements and contributions that foster the ASEAN identity, promote the ASEAN spirit, and champion the ASEAN way. ASP is among the active movers behind the ASEAN Autism Network and the ASEAN Mapping Project.

ASP San Mateo Chapter joins Summer Mess Fest

Newly-minted Autism Society Philippines San Mateo Chapter joined SM San Mateo’s Summer Mess Fest as its first activity last 12 May 2018. It was a memorable event for both parents and children with autism. They enjoyed the clay molding and sand play (which helped develop their motor skills), the hand wall painting (which enhanced their imagination) and the socialization with the neurotypical children, true to the spirit of inclusion. True to its name, the event was one big MESSY but FUN party!

Happy and Independent

When Kerstian was diagnosed with autism at 3 years old, we thought he would only stay at home as he grew old and would need round-the-clock care. But with the guidance of professionals and special schools, Kerstian developed, was mainstreamed and even graduated high school. We are proud that he learned to be independent. We decided to send him to attend Independent Living Learning Center Cebu, and enrolled for their Job Readiness Program.

The image shows Kerstian with his ILLC coaches in a grocery store.
Kerstian Menguito with his ILLC coach
Our whole family is so happy, after Miss Mona Magno-Veluz, ASP National President of ASP, came to Cebu to introduce the Autism Works program. She assessed several young adults with autism for employment -- and Kerstian qualified! We thought it was impossible for Kerstian to work in a company as big as SM Markets! Over the last year, he worked in SM Savemore in Parkmall and SM Hypermarket in JMall. With the help of ILLC, ASP and SM, Kerstian is now working -- included with typical employees -- happy and independent.

According to Ms. Mona, "I can see Kerstian works hard! I also see his struggles; but what's great is that Kerstian is working constantly on improving himself."

The ASP Career Placement Initiative gears up!

“The transition to adulthood is especially sensitive. As a strong advocate of mobilizing the world’s youth to contribute to our collective future, I call for societies to invest more funds in enabling young persons with autism to be part of their generation’s historic push for progress.” -United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon

The Autism Society Philippines and the University of the Philippines Diliman College of Education partnered to conduct an ASP Career Placement Initiative (ASP CaPI) empowerment activity last 20 March 2016. Dr. Grace Gomez, professor who specializes in psychometrics and PWD counselling, and her class of MA candidates (some teachers, others recruitment professionals) moderated a holistic approach to preparing PWAs for employment.

PWA Applicants for Job Readiness Program

The PWA applicants, most of whom have undergone the Job Readiness Program of the Independent Living Learning Center, were first tested for their interest areas and general aptitude. Those who struggled were given accommodation by the proctors, as long as time limits were kept. They were taught basics of how to apply for a job, preparing for job interviews and do’s and don’ts in job hunting. For the neurotypical, these fundamentals are sometime taken for granted; but these need to be articulated for this with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This short talk was quickly followed by a demo and a one-on-one simulation where everyone were given a feel for what an interview could be like. Tips for individuals to work on at home will be part of the activity report. The PWA applicants were also engaged in a self-confidence exercise; where the moderator guided them in how to appreciate their strengths and to be more aware of areas they can improve on.

This session was conducted for the purpose of helping persons with autism find meaningful work. It is our intention for PWAs to find employment and for them to stay employed. It is important for them to find a coach or to be able to articulate their feelings about work fulfillment, so they can be led to their true vocation.

ASP CaPI Batch 1 are profiled for "AutiSM at Work" -- a pilot employment program with the SM Food Group. The candidates will be screened for positions in SM supermarkets as baggers.

The ASP Career Placement Initiative is an program that involves the screening, counselling and placement of adults with autism for employment. We match persons with autism and compassionate employers. ASP calls for employers to look at PWAs as potential contributors with unique skills that can become their company’s competitive advantage. ASP is vested in creating Autism-OK workplaces and in helping individuals who are ready for employment find jobs they will enjoy for life.

ASP joins SM Marketmall for PWD Sensitivity Seminar

In keeping with SM’s tradition of strengthening its commitment to customer service, particularly in addressing the needs of persons with disabilities, the SM Marketmall - DasmariƱas , Cavite, conducted the seminar entitled “Caring for Special Customers” on 27 February 2016 at 7:00 AM at the second floor parking of the SM Marketmall DasmariƱas. For ten years now, SM Supermalls and its branches all over the country have conducted PWD sensitivity trainings to their employees twice a year with an eye to continuously ensuring a truly PWD-friendly and service Mall. Attending this seminar were 40 SM affiliates, security and janitorial personnel, tenants and vendors of SM Marketmall DasmariƱas.

Ms. Janette PeƱa with son Muneer

Speaking on behalf of the autism community was Jan PeƱa, ASP Board Trustee and ASP DasmariƱas Chapter President, together with Muneer PeƱa, her 20 year-old son with autism. Tita Jan enlightened the audience on the nature of autism as a developmental condition and its recognizable signs among mall goers who have autism. The audience showed heightened interest as Tita Jan PeƱa flashed pictures that showed what an SM employee can do in special situations involving a customer with autism, such as responding to a lost child with autism, to hyperactive and aggressive behavior, or tantrums, and the language one can use to get across an autistic child in need of help inside a mall. Best is to regard customers with autism with an understanding “SM-ile”, a comforting nod, and a happy, helping gesture at all times.

ASP is endlessly thankful to SM Cares for its immeasurable contributions to the advocacy for persons with disabilities. Because the PWD sensitivity program has positively transformed the heart of SM into a loving and caring environment for PWD’s, SM has truly become a second home to many families living with autism.

About the contributor: Mary Janette Infantado-PeƱa is a former President and Executive Director of the National Autism Society Philippines. She is also a former President of the Autism Society Philippines Bacoor and DasmariƱas Chapters (Cavite). Ms. Janette is a Graduate of AB Psychology from the University of the Phil, Dil. QC.

Walang iwanan!

Autism Society Philippines joins 1st Earthquake Resilience Conference

Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Senior Citizens, like everyone else in the affected populace, struggle through in times of natural disasters as earthquakes and typhoons. These two sectors are particularly vulnerable to the calamitous effects of the crises given the physical and/or mental limitations in their conditions, and the lack of plans and programs for PWDs and the elderly on how to best prepare for and deal with such calamities.

Participants attending 1st Earthquake Resilience Conference including PWDs and Senior Citizens

A symposium to present and discuss the issue was held last 29 June 2015 at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. Under the auspices of SM Cares in partnership with DOS-PHILVOLCS, NDRRMC and MMDA, the half-day event was called “Earthquake Resilience Conference – 1st Earthquake Conference for Persons with Disabilities” which featured subject matter experts and attendees from Senior Citizen and PWD groups from around Metro Manila. The ASP participants consisted of PWAs, chapter leaders, parents, siblings and service providers.

Resource speakers included PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Renato Solidum, Jr., Architect Jaime Silva of the United Architects of the Philippines, Mr. Mark Padil, a Behavioral Specialist from the Autism Society Philippines and Mr. Johnny Yu, Director of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Their highly informative presentations expounded on the nature and hazards/risks involved during earthquakes, as well as recommended course of actions our PWDs and senior citizens can do during such eventualities. Mark Padil for his part detailed on Persons with Autism (PWA) specific behaviors and practical response options for emergency assistance workers tending to PWAs.

The conference included an open forum session where a number of senior citizens and PWDs were able to ask questions. A small section in the venue displayed Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and paraphernalia recently acquired by the city of Manila for its Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council unit. Towards the conference close, all participants received emergency preparedness tokens courtesy of SM Cares Foundation consisting of an information card, whistle and small flashlight.

One brief video presentation during the event, the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, emphasized on the need for PWDs’ inclusion in the overall disaster risk management plan and program of every community. Bringing this forward by way of this earthquake resilience conference is one major positive step toward this end.

A Partner that Cares

SM Cares received a Special Recognition at the recently concluded ASEAN Corporate Sustainability Summit and Awards 2015 last March 27 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Makati. The award was received by Ms. Liza Silerio and Mr. Chito Bauzon. This singular acclaim was in recognition of its many efforts for the community, most especially for persons with disabilities.

The SM Team during the awarding

SM Prime, through its SM Cares, has shown continuous support and commitment to building a Filipino society welcoming to persons with autism and other disabilities. Since 2009, SM Mall of Asia and Arena hosted Angels Walk for Autism every January. This year, the Angels Walk in SM Arena gathered a record-breaking 12,000 autism advocates – the biggest event among all local PWD events. SM Supermalls comprehensive frontliner education (begun in 2004), which consists of training modules on handling customers with special needs, is best-in-class and is apparent in the way children and adults with autism are treated in SM Supermalls nationwide -- by mall management down to the cleaning staff. To date, ASP and other disability groups have reached more than 25,000 of SM front liners through this program.

SM Cares has been a valuable partner to the Autism Society Philippines in making available "Sensory-Friendly Movies: Sounds Down, Lights Up" to autism communities all over the country, through our National organization and our 72 provincial chapters. Since 2009, SM Cinemas have made possible the dream of many to enjoy a wholesome movie on a Sunday morning by offering children with autism and their families a safe, accessible and compassionate environment. This offering of sensory-friendly movies reflects a continuous aspiration to be attuned to unmet customer needs. SM Cinemas all over the country have become a training ground of sorts for children with autism to interact with and get exposed to the sights and sounds of a bustling society.

SM Supermalls nationwide have also become the home of "Colors of A Spectrum,” ASP’s photography workshop and exhibit showcasing the works of youth with autism mentored by photography experts. The latest of this partnership between SM Supermalls and ASP chapters was held in Baguio City for the 7th consecutive year last 22 February 2015. SM Supermalls also acmmodates other events organized by ASP chapters in various parts of the county, like the celebration of the World Autism Awareness Day every April 2. Historically, the first WAAD celebration in the Philippines was held in SM North EDSA in 2008.

With how SM Cares’ programs have profoundly affected the lives of many Filipinos with disabilities, our autism community feels the “heart” behind these high-impact initiatives is one worth emulating by business enterprises all over the world.

Congratulations SM Cares! Salamat po at nandiyan kayo!

The Amazing MOA Parade of Lights

Children with autism and their families from the ASP Pasay Chapter were privileged to be invited to SM Mall of Asia last 29 November 2014 to a front-seat view in the celebration of Parade of Lights 2014.

ASP Pasay officers and kids

The children truly enjoyed the experience of watching the parade as different cartoon characters and floats marched in their colorful, lighted costumes, in tune with the Christmas carols in the background. Even with the signs of impending rain, you could still hear the audience shouting "WOW!" whenever a new float passed by. Nobody moved from their spots until the culmination of the show. It was truly an amazing experience for the kids and even the adults enjoyed the event!

Cebu’s first sensory friendly movie screening

August 20 marked an important day for families living with autism; because it marked the first sensory friendly movie shown in Cebu. SM Cares offered children with special needs and their families a chance to experience seeing a film on the big screen -- “Planes: Fire and Rescue.” Over 225 special kids from 11 special schools in Cebu lined up in SM Cinema 1 at 8:30am, accompanied by 275 family members, caregivers, volunteers from Velez College PT/OT, Rotary Clubs, and Reach Center staff. The event was overseen by ASP Cebu Chapter President Kathy Castellano and Adviser Sandra Espina.

ASP Cebu Sensory-Friendly Movie in line

The challenge for children with ASD in coping in the movie theatre, involves potential sensory stimulation overload from the dark environment, the loud sounds, the bright lights and the cold room temperature. However, on that day, SM Cares provided 1) a friendly and acceptable environment for the special kids to get up, move around and even make little noise, 2) warm lighting instead of total darkness, 3) lowered the volume of special effect and music, and 4) less trailers.

About the Contributor: Sandra Espina served as the ASP Cebu Chapter President from 2009 to 2014 and is currently the chapter's adviser. She is the Managing Director of Ivory Properties. Sandra and her spouse Joseph, Rotary District 3860 Governor, are parents to three boys. Zach, their youngest, is on the spectrum.

Team ASP discovers the new SM Exploreum

The SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Incorporated (SMLEI), through SM Cares, recently invited Autism Society Philippines to be among the first guests of the newly renovated Exploreum at the SM Mall of Asia. Eight new galleries which include 250 interactive exhibits will continue to show educational content through state-of-the art technologies. Exploreum is a place of total immersion that will stimulate curiosity and inspire interest in science. It’s guiding principle is to make science relevant in everyday life at the same time make learning fun and interactive for its patrons.

Exploreum had its soft opening and ASP had its first taste of the new Exploreum last 9 August 2014, bringing in a total of 50 CWAs with their parents. The CWA’s had a fun day exploring the whole center and taking curious walks through the new galleries. Below are the parents’ testimonials on their experience at Exploreum with their kids:

CWAs and Family in SM Exploreum

Monique Pinpin with son, Mico: “We enjoyed exploring the exhibit of helicopter models especially my son who is fond of looking at the spinning of its ‘elisi’ and the different wheels used for transportation. Thank to SM Exploreum for inviting us.”

Leyminda Maranon, with son Julliann: “He was happy and enjoyed the event. He immediately told his dad about his experience through phone call right after the event. He learned about what happens in day and night through the planetarium show. Most of all, he socialized well with other CWAs.”

Imelda Alviso, with son Paulo: “My kid enjoyed it especially the many trivias written. It’s very informative and SM Exploreum employees are very friendly and smiling. The facilities helped them in turn taking, waiting, focusing, and listening to different sounds.”

Annabelle Saman, with son Gerard John: “We really had fun and my son enjoyed the exhibit especially about the solar system, earth and volcano. And the gallery attendant was also impressed that he knew about how many planets we have and he named them in order. He also enjoyed the show from planetarium and he felt like travelling to the moon. Thanks a lot to SM Exploreum for this opportunity.”

Agripina Macaroy, with nephew Lance: “We really had a great time exploring the Exploreum. It was so amazing and very educational. My nephew really loves Exploreum, especially the vintage cars that’s why he wishes to go back there again.”

Lights up Sounds down in Pampanga

Children with autism are known to be sensitive to a variety of sensory stimuli; and because of this, most of them cannot enjoy some leisure and relaxation activities typical individuals do. One good example is movie-watching, most children with autism cannot get inside a movie house; and therefore cannot join their families and enjoy a good movie together. The darkness of the room, the loud sound, the required quietness while watching and the prolonged sitting can contribute to sensory overload, which may lead to tantrums.

Participants watching “Lights up Sound down”

SM Cares through SM City Pampanga hosted a SFM event entitled “Lights up Sound down” exclusively for children with autism and other disability last 30 July 2014, Wednesday, 10 in the morning at SM City Pampanga Cinema 3. The activity aims to provide children with autism a movie watching experience on a big screen inside a cinema that have been adapted to their sensory sensitivities together with other audience who can understand the shouting/crying and/or running of these children inside the room.

The event was attended by a total of 108 children with special needs along with their parents and caregivers from the members of ASP CSFP and Hagonoy Chapters, DepEd ALS-PWD learners from the Division of San Fernando and San Simon, Adelle Grace Montessori, Crownvale School and San Fernando Elementary School students with autism, along with other CWA from other towns of Pampanga.

Many children with autism who came are “first timers” and their parents were quite nervous about how their children will react. But it was such a great feeling to see these children and their families enjoy a movie together.
“Thank you for yesterday’s activity. You made the children so happy. They really enjoyed. Congratulations!”- Melissa Sanchez, DepEd ALS Coordinator, Division of San Fernando.

“Thank you, it was so much fun! Di ko expect kaya pala naming tapusin yung movie” – Mommy Malou Maniago, mother of Ericka, 5 yrs old with autism.

“Success! We were all happy, akala naming “wonderland” lang kami mga mommies kasi di naming expect na magtatagal sila sa loob. Expect the worst, hope for the best! Yahoo! Another milestone for the kids.” - Mommy Eugie Corpuz, mother of Bianca, 7yrs old with autism.

“It was a very fun experience for a big number of special ones as it allowed them to watch a full length movie wherein they can be themselves without excuse. They can stim out loud minus the comments. And they can easily walk away at scenes they don’t want to see without the odd reactions from the other viewers. But above it all, such a relief for all parents, guardians, family members, teachers who accompanied each kid as they also enjoyed the movie with emotional easiness.” -Mommy Wham Liang, mother of Josh, 5 yrs old with autism.
The Autism Society Philippines City of San Fernando Pampanga Chapter, with all the children with special needs and their families extend our warmest gratitude to SM Cares, through SM City Pampanga Management headed by Mr. Junias Eusebio and Anna Lisa Carino.

ASP Valenzuela Chapter and SM Center Valenzuela held a sensory-friendly movie screening last 5 August 2014 at Cinema 2. They also provided 140 packs of free snacks for the children that were distributed while watching the movie. “Engr.
