The 29th National Autism Consciousness Week

Duty-bearers from government agencies and rights-bearers from civil society organizations and advocate institutions are one with the nation in celebrating the Philippines' 29th National Autism Consciousness Week from 20 to 26 January 2025. President Fidel Ramos' Proclamation 711 of 1996 made this annual observance possible by inspiring genuine and organic acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation of persons on the autism spectrum in our society and our global community.

The image shows a colorful wavy designs and white background at the center.
The The 29th National Autism Consciousness Week Poster

The week's activities promote action by the public and private sectors towards enabling persons on the autism spectrum to live with dignity, enjoy equal rights and access, function independently, and contribute productively. Society should strive beyond “consciousness” or “awareness” and inspire genuine inclusion -- through acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation! Public and private institutions are encouraged to spearhead creative activities, events, and programs toward building opportunities for our neurodiverse population nationwide.

Read more about the NACW 2025 Game Plan for the week at: https://bit.ly/NACW2025-gameplan. This is a live document that continues to be revised as additional inputs are receives from advocates from all over the country.

This year’s theme: “Pag-angat ng mga Lider Para sa Pagsulong ng Lipunang Walang Naiiwan” is consistent with the global disability community’s aspirations expressed by the United Nations during the last International Day of Persons with Disability. The theme underscores the vital role of leadership in advancing an inclusive society that leaves no one behind. It aligns with the United Nations’ vision of empowering persons with disabilities to take on leadership roles, shaping policies and practices that promote equality and accessibility. By focusing on leadership, the theme highlights the need to break down barriers and create opportunities for individuals with disabilities to lead within their communities and in broader societal contexts.

This message particularly resonates with the autism community, where advocacy and self-determination are key to driving meaningful change. Empowering individuals on the spectrum as leaders amplify their voices and inspire others to recognize their potential and contributions. As the Autism Society Philippines continues to champion inclusion, this year’s theme serves as a call to action for everyone — from families and educators to employers and policymakers — to invest in nurturing the leadership of individuals with autism.

The theme intends to:

1. empower Individuals on the autism spectrum to lead change. Cultivate leadership skills and provide opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum to advocate for themselves and their communities, inspiring others and driving meaningful societal transformation.

2. promote inclusive practices across sectors. Encourage stakeholders—families, educators, employers, and policymakers—to adopt inclusive policies and practices that create equitable opportunities for persons with autism in all aspects of life, including education, employment, and civic engagement.

3. foster acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation. Strengthen societal understanding of autism and the unique contributions of individuals on the spectrum, breaking stereotypes and fostering an environment where diversity is celebrated and everyone has the chance to thrive.

The 28th National Autism Consciousness Week

Duty-bearers from government agencies and rights-bearers from civil society organizations and advocate institutions are one with the nation in celebrating the Philippines 28th National Autism Consciousness Week to be held from 14 to 20 January 2024. This annual observance was made possible by President Fidel Ramos' Proclamation 711 of 1996 – in inspiring genuine and organic acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation of persons on the autism spectrum in our society and our global community.

The image shows a dark aqua background with three settings logo shown at the left. There are name and date of activities and a QR Code shown at the right side below.
The 28th National Autism Consciousness Week Banner

The activities of the week promote action by the public and private sectors towards enabling persons on the autism spectrum to live with dignity, enjoy equal rights and access, function independently, and contribute productively. Society should strive beyond “consciousness” or “awareness” and inspire genuine inclusion -- through acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation! Public and private institutions are encouraged to spearhead creative activities, events, and programs, toward building opportunities for our neurodiverse population, all over the country.

Read more about the NACW 2024 Game Plan for the week at: https://bit.ly/NACW2024-gameplan. This is a live document that continues to be revised as additional inputs are receives from advocates from all over the country.

This year's theme, "Accessible Education and Economic Empowerment for Pinoys on the Autism Spectrum" -- is consistent with the global disability community’s aspirations expressed by the United Nations during the last International Day of Persons with Disability:

“Given the multiple crises we are facing today, the world is not on track to reach numerous Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets by 2030. Preliminary findings from the forthcoming UN Disability and Development Report 2023 indicate that the world is even more off-track in meeting several SDGs for persons with disabilities.

Our efforts to rescue the SDGs for, with, and by persons with disabilities, need to be intensified and accelerated, given that persons with disabilities have historically been marginalized and have often been among those left furthest behind.”

A fundamental shift in commitment, solidarity, financing and action is critical. Encouragingly, with the adoption of the Political Declaration of the recent SDG Summit, world leaders have recommitted themselves to achieving sustainable development and shared prosperity for all, by focusing on policies and actions that target the poorest and most vulnerable, including persons with disabilities.”

The theme intends to:

1. nurture partnerships between the government and the private sector to realize accessible education and economic empowerment for Filipinos on the autism spectrum – consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #4 and #8.

2. inspire disability inclusion among like-minded national, local and community thought leaders who create policy and provide services for Filipinos on the autism spectrum and those who care for them– consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #10.

3. grow a community of allies within the country, the region and the rest of the world, supportive of programs towards genuine disability inclusion -- consistent with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #10 and #17.

National Autism Consciousness Week 2022

Duty-bearers from government agencies and rights-bearers from civil society organizations and advocate institutions are one with the nation in celebrating the 26th Philippine National Autism Consciousness Week to be held from 24 to 30 January 2022. This annual observance was made possible by President Fidel Ramos' Proclamation 711 of 1996 – in inspiring genuine and organic acceptance, accommodation and appreciation of persons on the autism spectrum in our society and our global community.

The activities of the week promote action by the public and private sectors towards enabling persons on the autism spectrum to live with dignity, enjoy equal rights and access, function independently and contribute productively. Society should strive beyond “consciousness” or “awareness” and inspire genuine inclusion -- through acceptance, accommodation and appreciation! Read more about the NACW 2022 Game Plan for the week at: http://bit.ly/NACW2022-gameplan. This is a live document that continues to be revised as additional inputs are receives from advocates from all over the country.

This year's theme "Nurturing Public-Private Alliances towards an Autism-OK Philippines" intends to:
  1. nurture partnerships between the government and the private sector to help Filipinos on the autism spectrum and those who care for them, rise above the challenges of the condition and the current economic and health situation;
  2. grow a community of allies within the country, the region and the rest of the world, supportive of programs towards genuine inclusion; and
  3. cultivate individual self-awareness, self-expression and feeling of belonging to a compassionate society.
The absence of the puzzle imagery in our materials is deliberate. The Autism Society Philippines does not support the use of the puzzle icon to represent autism, as persons on the spectrum should neither be illustrated as "mind-boggling" nor "incomplete".

In contrast, the sunflower that lives by facing the light, is a fitting representation of a community that finds strength and hope amid life’s challenges.

The image shows beautiful sunflowers, small trees, sky and clouds.
Sunflower Field

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a globally recognised symbol for hidden or non-apparent disabilities -- such as autism. People living with hidden disabilities often face barriers in their daily lives including a lack of understanding and negative attitudes. So some choose to wear the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower to discreetly identify that they may need support, help, or just a little more time in shops, transport, or public spaces. Although one may not be able to see these challenges, they’re still there.

Message of Hope: Leni Robredo

Isang mainit na pagbati sa The Autism Society Philippines sa inyong pagdiriwang ng 25th National Autism Consciousness Week! Maraming salamat sa buong-puso ninyong pagsusulong sa adbokasiyang ito.

Sa kabila ng pandemya, it brings me joy to see that your organization thrives on bringing people together, bound by a common purpose. This is at the core of what makes us truly human -- we build connections, nurture these relationships, and foster a community where we empower each other. Magkakarugtong ang diwa nating lahat, and each person is an extension of another.

You have been animated by this philosophy, not only in theory; but also in the initiatives you've launched throughout the years. By creating spaces like this, sinisiguro ninyong bumubuo tayo ng isang lipunang bukas at malay, isang mundo kung saan bawat kababayan nating may autismo ay kinakalinga at inaaruga. At kahit ngayong may pandemya, you have built bridges where you can, making real connections with fellow advocates and the like; patuloy na naghahanap ng paraan para makatulong sa kapwa, para maabot yung mga kailangang abutin, dito at ngayon. Hanga ako sa bawat isa sa inyo.

Ang panawagan ko sa inyo ngayon: Continue to widen your circles of service and compassion. Keep having meaningful conversations and find new ways to reach more. And together, reimagine the future with courage and with hope -- manifesting a better normal, a world where no one is left behind. Kaisa ninyo kami sa OVP sa pagsulong ng isang mas makatao, mas patas, at may mapagkalingang mundo. Maraming salamat at mabuhay kayong lahat!

Message to the ASP from President Duterte

My warmest greetings to the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) as it celebrates the Philippine National Autism Consciousness Week.

Coping with autism remains to be a challenging task not just for the people who have this condition; but for their families as well. It is imperative that we take concrete action in spreading autism awareness through information campaigns and other activities.

I commend the ASP and other government and private agencies for spearheading this meaningful occasion. I hope that this year's events will serve as a huge step towards ensuring that persons living with autism will have meaningful, productive and dignified lives.

Together, let us continue to be partners in fostering a society that is more inclusive, accommodating and accepting of every person, regardless of their circumstances and developmental needs.

I wish you a happy and successful event.

This annual observance was made possible by President Fidel Ramos' Proclamation 711 of 1996 – in inspiring acceptance, accommodation and appreciation of persons with autism (PWAs) in society. The activities of the week promote action by the public and private sectors towards enabling PWAs to live with dignity, enjoy equal rights and access, function independently and contribute productively. We would like society to strive beyond “awareness” and to inspire genuine inclusion -- through acceptance, accommodation and appreciation!

"Pagtuon: Tugon sa mga Pilipinong May 'K' dulot ng Autismo" celebrates PWAs #Kakayahan #Kagalingan #Kakanyahan #Katalinuhan #Kapansanan. We hope to inspire awareness, acceptance, accommodation and appreciation of autism in all sectors of society. Public and private institutions are encouraged to spearhead creative activities, events and programs, towards building opportunities for our neurodiverse population. We recognize that to effect the changes we need, we must work together.

Autism heroes congregate for Angels Walk for Autism

The Angels Walk for Autism, spearheaded by the Autism Society Philippines in partnership with SM Cares, kicked off the National Autism Consciousness Week at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City last 14 January 18, Sunday, with the gates opening as early as 6:30am. Other partners include MOA Arena, SM Mall of Asia, National Council on Disability Affairs, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability and the ASEAN Autism Network.

“The Angels Walk for Autism has become a major event that attracts national and international advocates,” according to Mona Magno-Veluz, ASP’s National President. “We are lucky to have 24,000 registered participants this year -- the biggest in our history! Angel Walks are also happening in Baguio, Cebu, Davao, General Santos, Iloilo, Lucena, Roxas, Tacloban, and Tagbilaran all throughout January.” Among the esteemed guests were Hon. Urawadee Sriphiromya, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Royal Thai Embassy, Former Ambassador Piroon Laismit, Executive Director of Asia-Pacific Center on Disability, Acting Executive Director of the National Council on Disability Affairs Carmen Zubiaga and Michelle Aventajado Best Buddies Philippines Country Manager.

The event celebrates the "autism heroes" -- government, business, developmental pediatricians, therapists and teachers -- who work tirelessly for the inclusion of persons with autism in society. This year’s theme, “From Awareness to Acceptance, Accommodation and Appreciation,” affirms our position that disability inclusion should not be limited to “consciousness” but must translate to visible, deliberate, policy-driven action.

The AOK-Talent Showcase kicked off at 8:00am with performances by the Mandaluyong CWD Drums and Lyre Band, Keith Ignacio, the ILLC Hearthrobs and Hunks, Tricia Cardino, Judith Rae and Red Avendano, Nunu Supaanong, Pauline Grace dela Cruz, Chaelda del Carmen and Cid Tampo. Charlene Danica Escasinas who received international recognition at the Autistic Talent Gala in Hong Kong was awarded the ASP Autism Angel Achievement Award (A5) by Senator Risa Hontiveros and ASP President Mona Magno-Veluz.

The new ASP program called HOMEpowerment was introduced by ASP President Mona Magno-Veluz. This free therapy program for young children with autism from indigent families, coupled with parent training, was made possible through a grant from Kiehl's Philippines, represented by Ms. Shar Le Chua, General Manager of LÓreal's Luxury Division and Ms. Candy Pangilinan, comedianne and autism mom, who lent her voice to the fund-raising efforts.

The Mixxed Fit Warm-Up was led by Donna and Desly Lim and a crew of superheroes which included Wowie de Guzman as Captain America.

The Program Proper kicked off with a prayer from the students of GS Options House. Young boys on the spectrum shared a simple yet innocently honest prayer for our community and sang a fun rendition of "Jesus is my Superhero." The Philippine National Anthem was accompanied by community shots of Angels Walk for Autism from past years. The TRC x Kid Lightning Crew, Medalists of 2017 World Supremacy Battlegrounds, wowed us all with a chest-thumping opening salvo.

ASP Chair Emeritus and current Chair of the ASEAN Autism Network Dang Koe commanded the stage as she made a grand entrance in a Wonder Woman costume. She joked about the lengths she would go for the autism advocacy!

The Autism Society Philippines chose to honor Autism Angels and Heroes who have made life better for persons and families who live with autism, with specially rendered videos and custom-forged medals.

From the business sector, Mr. Hans Sy (SM Prime), Ms. Annie Garcia (President, SM Supermalls) and Mr. Steven Tan (COO, SM Supermalls) received medals in behalf of businesses creating autism-friendly experiences. SM Supermalls, through it groundnbreaking SM Cares program, pioneered PWD sensitivity training as an operational requisite for all their malls. Each mall conducts PWD sensitivity training twice a year, as part of their annual objectives. The company has set the bar for PWD-friendly public spaces and projects in the Philippine retail industry.

From the government sector, Senator Risa Hontiveros and Representative Tom Villarin received medals in behalf of public servants who create policies, protocols and programs for the growing population of PWAs in the Philippines. Senator Hontiveros was the primary sponsor behind the Mental Health Act of 2017; while Representative Villarin recently filed HB 6934 or the National Autism Care Plan Bill which defines the roadmap for genuine inclusion of persons with autism in society.

Developmental pediatricians -- Dr. Mimi Avendano, Dr. Rochelle Pacifico (President, Philippine Society of Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics) and Dr. Alexis Reyes -- received medals on behalf of the 51 other specialists in their field, currently practising in the Philippines. They possess training and experience to consider the medical and psychosocial aspects of children's and adolescents' developmental and behavioral problems; and are important partners to families in the long-term care of their family member with autism.

Speech Pathologists -- Teacher Ely Bautista (President, Philippine Association of Speech Pathologists), Teacher Mae Sadicon and Teacher Weng Ynion -- received medals in behalf of the 300 or so practicing speech therapists in the Philippines. With communication as a key challenge in persons on the spectrum, speech pathologists with legitimate training help PWA develop expressive and receptive language, which can open doors to learning and socialization.

Occupational Therapists -- Teacher Achie Gozon (Past President, Philippine Academy of Occupational Therapists) and Teacher Karla Tolentino -- received medals on behalf of the approximately 600 licensed occupational therapists in the Philippines, who chose to build their practice around developmental disabilities. It takes special dedication to promote, maintain, and develop the skills needed by persons on the spectrum to be functional in a school setting and beyond. They help families build learning skills, self-esteem, self-confidence, independence, and social interaction in our family members with autism.

Special Education Teachers -- Teacher Arnold Alegre (Hopewell School), Teacher Landa Bautista-Abundo (The Learning Center), Teacher Archie David (Independent Living Learning Center), Teacher Bunny Joaquin (SHINE Intervention Center) -- received medals on behalf of the special education teachers who have the daunting task of working with students who may have learning, mental, emotional, and physical disabilities. They are masters in instructional and behavioral accommodation, ensuring inclusion for all learners with special needs.
The awarding of medals were punctuated by performances from Thara Marie Santiago and Charlene Danica Escasinas -- both A5 awardees.

The ASP Autism Works Partner of the Year was awarded for the first time this year. The honor went to SM Markets who was represented by Mr. Jose Mari Mendoza (President, SM Supermarkets), Mr. Jojo Tagbo (President, SM Savemore) and Ms. Dorothy Sobrevega (AVP - HR, SM Food Group) for the "AutiSM at Work" program. The first meeting was held in September 2015 and it took almost a year for the company to launch the pilot in July 2016. Since then, the leading supermarket chain has filled 28 positions with workers with autism in Cebu, Iloilo, Mandaluyong, Quezon City and Taguig. A 100 percent growth is expected in 2018 -- including new stores in NCR, Cavite, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Laguna.

Ms. Dang called for the showing of appreciation for our loved ones who have been our heroes in our helping our children with autism live better lives. Our community of family members, yayas, teachers, therapists, doctors, and advocates were joined in one glorious virtual hug!

Ms. Mona took to the stage to give the last word. She stressed the need to come together in support of the National Autism Care Plan and in showing society the unified strength of the "mighty magulang, awesome advocates and power PWAs" of ASP. She then called for the official start of the walk.

Kicking off from the MOA Arena, participants made their way to the MOA Music Hall. The finish line became a place to take souvenir shots and chat with fellow advocates before naturally dispersing into the mall in small groups. Ms. Dang awarded June Andre Del Monte aka Angel Warrior and Reyn Vincent Cuento aka Super Angel as winners of the Autism Hero Costume Contest. They split the purse and went home with P5,000 each.

The Autism Society Philippines thanks you all for making the Angels Walk for Autism the super success that is was. Let's continue to build and Autism-OK Philippines! Until next year!

Message from President Rodrigo Duterte

My warmest greetings to the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) as it celebrates the 21st Philippine National Autism Consciousness Week.

The image shows President Rodrigo Duterte Standing in front of the wooden wall with the logo of Sagisag ng Pangulo ng Pilipinas and Philippine Flag shown at the left side.
President Rodrigo Duterte

Our goal to make the Philippines a truly just and progressive nation begins by ensuring that every citizen receives social services that they need. I thank the Autism Society Philippines for being a steadfast partner of the government in realizing this task. May you continue to uplift the lives of our people, particularly those who are marginalized and those who have special needs.

As we observe the National Autism Consciousness Week, I hope that the ASP will work closely the advocates and partners in promoting the welfare and development of persons with autism (PWAs). As your event's theme suggests, care for PWAs must transition from the confines of the home and school to universities, businesses, and workplaces.

Realizing this aspiration is the key to affirming that ours is a society founded on compassion, equality, and respect. I, therefore, ask the Filipino people to be more tolerant and inclusive. Let us all learn to fully accept our differences and appreciate what others can do to contribute to society. It is only through these actions that we can achieve real and lasting change.

I wish you a meaningful and successful event.

artworks of the parents of the children. During the fashion show, a hat was passed around that
served as the fund raising for the project.

ASP Tacloban Chapter celebrates Autism Consciousness Week

The National Autism Consciousness Week commemoration in Tacloban, which kicked off last 17 January 2016, was a great success. The kick off program, the Angels Walk for Autism, the Art Exhibit and series of seminar workshops -- the commemoration did not only bring awareness but also much needed education of parents, professionals and the public on concerns of persons with autism.

Autism Word Display of ASP Tacloban

Most importantly, the children and adults with autism had their chance to shine. They showcased their talents during the opening program at Robinson's Place which brought entertainment and fun. I felt blessed to have had the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences as a SPED Teacher.

Message from Speaker Feliciano R. Belmonte Jr.

The following is the message from Speaker of the House of Representatives Feliciano Belmonte Jr. to the Autism Society Philippines for the 20th National Autism Consciousness Week.

Sonny Belmonte
I join the Autism Society of the Philippines and the 1.2 million Filipinos with autism and their families in celebrating the Philippines National Autism Consciousness Week.

The inspiration we draw from various initiatives that promote integration of people with autism (PWAs) enables leaders in the government and private sector alike to take into consideration the distinct needs of PWAs in policy making and programs we espouse. We make sure that they are afforded their civil rights and the protection mandated by the laws of our land. We share the commitment to give them human dignity and equality in economic opportunities which they rightfully deserve.

As we march towards the renewal of this collective aspiration, I call on various sectors of society to do their share in making our communities more adaptive and sensitive to the distinct interests of PWAs. Congratulations to the ASP and may you continue to be the champion of PWAs in advancing their welfare.

Mabuhay po kayo!

My warmest greetings to the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) as you spearhead the observance of National Autism Consciousness Week.

AuTama -- a night of friends, food, fun

Socialization has never been easy for many adults on the spectrum. Scholarly readings tell us that autism-related differences in the wiring of the brain can make socializing difficult because of many challenges -- sensory issues, social cognition, among others. But for one night of the National Autism Consciousness Week, we decided to brave our fears and usher in a night of youthful fun.

"AuTama! Trivia Night" is the brainchild of ASP President Mona Magno-Veluz. "Adults with autism are bright and full of knowledge no one would ever expect. A trivia night -- similar to the ones set in bars -- would be a perfect way to socialize and to show off their strengths." For the event to be one that will encourage personal growth for the participants, it was important to have a venue that did not feel like school (many have spent far too many years in a school environment) and to work with partners outside the ASP family (we need to breach their comfort zone).

President Mona tapped the muscle of the ASP Angel Volunteer Corps and friends from the autism advocacy community -- Association for Adults with Autism (Cathy Cham) and Best Buddies (Anj Onrubia) -- who were eager organizers and players. MIESCOR gamely jumped in to donate the prizes. Miriam College students from the College of Education -- led by Prof. Susan Morillo -- were in charge of the trivia questions. Miriam College PR students, meanwhile, took the lead on handling the registration, physical arrangements and prizes. Playing teams of 4 members each were put together by combining neuro-typicals and adults with autism.

Our Adults with autism during the Autama

On 30 January 2015, Puzzle Cafe, the first autism advocacy cafe in the country, played host to an eager bunch of young people. Jose Canoy, who was the inspiration for the restaurant, kicked off the event with a prayer. Ice breakers and the game quickly followed. Selfies, group photos, laughter, playing, dancing, singing, crashing (yes, we broke furniture), winning -- such was the richness of the evening's experience. Iced tea, kamote fries, sandwiches, finger food and ice cream overflowed -- tummies were happy! Parents and guests (such as NCDA's Mr. Zaldy Sanchez) were supposed to have left the room to observe the party from the al fresco dining area -- but it did not seem possible to pry their eyes from watching these typically aloof PWAs having so much fun!

By the end of the evening, many lingered -- groups were still in animated conversations with their newfound friends. Here's to more fun, socialization events for the growing number of adults on the spectrum!

1Bansa, 1Pangako at the DSWD Central Office

The Autism Society Philippines was invited last 02 February 2014 to join the leadership and the social welfare professionals of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Central Office to their Monday assembly to talk about autism. The talk was integrated into the Department's engaging morning assembly. ASP National President Mona Magno-Veluz talked about what our disability community would like to see from government in terms of support, in line with "1Bansa, 1Pangako" initiative. Secretary Dinky Soliman made the 1Pangako pledge and said a few words to commemorate the National Autism Consciousness Week, which coincided with the agency's anniversary.
