Building Local Chapters
The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) has grown from the 11 mothers who bonded together for the causes of their children in 1989 to nearly 13,000 members, with 97 chapters all over the country.
Leading in Autism Advocacy
The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) increases public awareness about challenges faced by Filipinos on the spectrum, advocating for appropriate services, and providing the latest information regarding intervention, education, and advocacy. It is comprised of persons with autism, families, teachers, and educators whose lives have been touched by autism.
Speaking in Unison
The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) reaches out to the many communities across the islands to organize and help make available services and support to persons with autism and their families, in close coordination with government agencies, local government units, and community builders. Our chapters remain to be driving force behind the organization's meteoric growth.

Opening doors
Social interaction and communication are basic to living a satisfactory life in today's society, and the lack there of might bring harships and challenges. It is not rocket science, but we know that there are actual people who have difficulties with these traits; people with autism (PWA).
ASD or Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong developmental exceptionality, which may challenge an individual's ability to communicate, socialize and adapt to the world around him. This idea of people with ASD hinders them from opportunities to grow and develop the things that they are good at. Willis Towers Watson is challenging the stigma by creating an inclusive environment for this talented group of individuals by expanding its scope which includes persons with autism.
Wearing a big smile on his face, Ryan recalls how he celebrated his first birthday as an associate here at Willis Towers Watson. He happily relays how his mother cooked and made him bring the food to the office as a treat to his teammates, and how he was surprised that the team gave him a birthday cake and offered him their well wishes. Ryan Cris Lucero, PWA, was hired few months ago through an initiative of WTW’s Inclusion and Diversity commitment.

Applicants during the assessment session
During the assessments and interviews, parents of adults with autism expressed their apprehensions about riding public transportation independently, compassionate treatment of their children at work, and public acceptance of their working PWAs. While misunderstandings are always a possibility, the ASP Autism Works Program minimizes risks by educating the employer on how to help PWAs become successful and communicating to the general public the value of workers with autism.

We want to celebrate the awesomeness of people with autism in this building. To our dear parents, siblings, children, adults who live with autism, this is your home.”

Model PWA at UNDAF Workshop
![]() |
PWA Ian Lopez and Mr. Ola Almgren talking
The workshop is a good avenue to influence policies that can positively affect Filipinos from five to thirty-year old's, which compose the majority of the population. Mr. Lopez noted from the synthesis of the workshop that the Filipino youth is demanding spaces for participation in many spheres of everyday life and not hug boxes or environments with a forced consensus that does not tolerate dissent (per a definition from Urban Dictionary) - whether online or in real life. He also noticed the themes of reducing vulnerabilities for the youth, intersectionality, leveling the playing field (“equal access for all” and fighting corruption) and harnessing of social media which is adaptively and maladaptively used in many cases, especially in the Philippine context.

Chef Waya Araos-Wijangco, Executive Chef of Gourmet Gypsy Art Cafe, quarterbacked the effort, making sure the the team, the restaurant and the menu was ready that evening. Chef Waya also leads the Open Hands School for Applied Arts where many of her staff were training in skills valuable in the restaurant industry. Endearing was how Chef Waya treated her team. She showers them with guidance and kudos; but as-a-matter-of-factly call out errors -- whether the worker have a disability or no. That, is true inclusion.

Staying the course: A Man’s Journey with Autism

Allen Garcia with ASP National President Mona Magno-Veluz.
Once I studied alongside neurotypical children. I was unaware of what I was doing. The storms had begun to rage on. Many new obstacles had popped up. Little by little, most of my peers started to become skeptical of what I can do -- who I am. I can say that my elementary and high school years have been the most stressful time of my life so far. I faced a lot of struggles I never anticipated – this ranged from bullying to social frustration, to failing a whole year of school. My family recognized all this and together, we worked past each obstacle. We stayed the course despite all the skepticism.

AuTama -- a night of friends, food, fun

Our Adults with autism during the Autama
On 30 January 2015, Puzzle Cafe, the first autism advocacy cafe in the country, played host to an eager bunch of young people. Jose Canoy, who was the inspiration for the restaurant, kicked off the event with a prayer. Ice breakers and the game quickly followed. Selfies, group photos, laughter, playing, dancing, singing, crashing (yes, we broke furniture), winning -- such was the richness of the evening's experience. Iced tea, kamote fries, sandwiches, finger food and ice cream overflowed -- tummies were happy! Parents and guests (such as NCDA's Mr. Zaldy Sanchez) were supposed to have left the room to observe the party from the al fresco dining area -- but it did not seem possible to pry their eyes from watching these typically aloof PWAs having so much fun!

Understanding Autism with SPEED

Carl veluz with the SPEED organizers
With ASP Trustee Peng So as the main speaker, the students had a chance to look into the lives of families facing the reality of autism. The workshop also featured a panel discussion with adults with autism: Carl Veluz, Patrick So and Gabby Atienza. The discussion helped the students understand what autism is and what the challenges they face in their everyday lives. They asked the panel questions like:
-What makes you similar to other people without autism?
-What makes you different from others?
-What helps you cope/deal with or survive the challenges you encounter in your life because of their condition/autism?
-What are your plans for the future?
-How can you achieve these plans?
