ASP colors our world Autism-OK!

The Autism Society Philippines commemorated World Autism Awareness Day through a collaborative art event aptly called the ASP Color It Autism-OK! at the Mall of Asia Arena Music Hall on 2 April, Tuesday. The event aimed to engage the Philippine autism community in an inclusive activity, where everyone, regardless of age and capabilities can participate.

The event began promptly at 3pm, with the opening prayer from Apolinario Mabini Awardeed and PWA Tomas Perez-Diaz. The ribbon cutting ceremony kicked off the event with ASEAN Autism Network Honorary Chairperson Dang Koe, ASP National President Mona Magno-Veluz, ASP SACi Vice President for External Carl Veluz, SM Supermalls Assistant Vice President for Marketing (CSR) Chito Bauzon, and SM Mall of Asia Mall Manager Amy Gonzales. The creative minds behind the upcoming Cinemalaya entry "Iska" about an impoverished grandmother taking care of a grandson with profound disability from autism -- film director Theodore Boborol, award-winning indie actress Ruby Ruiz and upcoming actor Pryle Gura -- also held sheers to our opening ribbon.

The event featured the 860 square feet of coloring surface, reproduced from Summit Books' "Hue Can Do It Manila". The pages were illustrated in pen and ink by publications professional and designer Ms. Asa Montenejo. Big thanks go out to Summit Books Editor-in-Chief Lio Mangubat and Smart Parenting Editor-in-Chief Leah Nemil-San Jose for helping put everything together!

The image shows participants coloring manila designs.

ASP Angel Corps Volunteers manned our registration tables and volunteer PWAs donned angel wings to distribute and collect crayons from silver buckets.

About 580 participants registered from ASP chapters from all over Metro Manila, Cavite, Rizal and Laguna. ASP Pasay Chapter brought home first prize for biggest contingent -- 32 Kidzania tickets worth P26,000 from our friends from Cebu Pacific; while ASP UP CAMP won P10,000 gift certificates from the SM Store.

The image shows a group of ASP Pasay standing in front of Color A-OK banner.
ASP Pasay was our big winner!

Ms. Carmen Zubiaga, Acting Executive Director of the National Council on Disability Affairs closed the event with a call to action to make every day "autism awareness" day; and the invitation for the vibrant Autism Society Philippines community to be more active in the cross-disability initiatives.

The image shows ASP National Board of Trustees having a group photo with Ms. Carmen Zubiaga standing both sides of Color A-OK banner.

This national autism advocacy event could not have been possible without the hard work of the ASP Color It Autism-OK! Project Team Ms. Mona Magno-Veluz, Ms. Peng So, Ms. Helen Cheng, Ms. Donna Lim and Ms. Imee Alviso. This was organized by the Autism Society Philippines with SM Cares, SM Mall of Asia, National Council on Disability Affairs, Summit Books, Cebu Pacific; and supported by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Japan-ASEAN Cooperation, Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability, ASEAN Autism Network and the ASEAN Autism Mapping Project.

"The Autism Society Philippines makes every day World Autism Awareness Day!" -- seeing this flashed on the iconic SM MOA Globamaze was an awesome way to end the day, considering how the ASP Color It Autism-OK! Collaborative Art Event at the SM MOA Music Hall was a resounding success! #AutismOKPH #TRENTAgether

Awakening flames of hope

This was the second time my son and I attended the ASP Autism Family Prayer Jamboree on World Autism Awareness Day. Last year, my entire family attended. I was slightly surprised and happy to know that this event existed, and that families of persons with autism were to be prayed over and blessed in an ecumenical gathering.

I thought the venue was brilliant! Quezon Memorial Circle is the perfect place for kids to romp around and explore, while the adults can sit or walk lazily about. There are plenty to see and buy from the vendors, with the breeze and the trees cooling us down. Since April is the start of summer, the 4:00 pm program was also ideal. We watched the performers rehearse onstage and then there was the program proper. The audience became excited with the songs and performances. Parents clapped and cheered seeing their children perform. There was variety and balance in the performances, we did not become bored. The emcee this year spoke in Filipino and connected.

The image shows PWAs having mass.
Our Adults with autism blessed during the mass
But what riveted us and touched our hearts were the prayers from the various ministers and priests. I think it was consoling and gratifying to know that these people share our burdens and fears. There are people who understand us. We became conscious that we belong. Hearing these men and women of God lifting our cares heavenward choked us. One minister read from the Bible about Jesus letting the little children come to Him. As the families were being blessed, we can almost feel an invisible hope and strength. God is with us in our daily struggles to understand our children with autism. Our hardship in living with persons with autism is our charism, our mission in life. Maybe this is our family’s contribution in making the earth more Christ-like. We gained a deep peace and spirituality in accepting this truth.

The colossal Quezon City Memorial Monument was lit up in blue at 7:00 pm. The countdown felt anticlimactic. The real event were the blessing and prayers. The pretty blue lights seemed symbolic of the awakened flame of hope and spiritual strength in our hearts. I thank the organizers for this remarkable event - they were even thoughtful enough to know how famished we were and provided food! No wonder my son never forgets and looks forward to the next World Autism Awareness Day!

ASP's Family Prayer Jamboree kick-offs a new WAAD tradition in Quezon City

The Autism Society Philippines in unity with the Quezon City PDAO, National Council on Disability Affairs, National Historical Commission and the ASEAN Autism Network, began a new tradition in Quezon City last 2 April 2016. We forewent the speeches typical of these sorties and instead gathered in prayerful celebration of life on the spectrum.

Performers with autism Cid Tampo, Chaelda del Carmen, Nica Escasiñas, Franco Cagayat, Thara Santiago & ASP Diliman Chapter’s Choir crooned and danced to praise music on stage, inspiring the community to sing and dance with them.

These performances were punctuated by prayers from PWA Gerald “JR” Tan, ASP National President Mona Veluz, NCDA Executive Director Carmen Zubiaga, SPED Teacher Jasmin Guan, ADHD Society of the Philippines VP and Autism Kuya John Meria, Pastor and Autism Dad Michael “Mike” Cariño, ASP Damariñas Cavite President Janette Peña and PWA Cid Tampo.

Fr. Angelito Ancla shared a reading from the bible and raised his hand to bless the community. While Thara Santiago sang “You Light Up My life,” participants lit candles -- a ceremony representing how the light and warmth of our advocacy need to be passed on from person to person.

ASP National President Mona Veluz returned to the stage to usher the ceremonial lighting up blue of the historic Quezon Memorial Monument, in the name of autism awareness.

Through the kindness of the Quezon City PDAO, the community of 300 participants -- from San Fernando, Pampanga to Iloilo City -- shared a humble agape meal amidst the festive camera clicks and familial hugs at the end of the evening.

We could also not forget the contribution and hard work from our volunteers from the ASP Angel Volunteer Corps and OT graduating student from the University of Sto. Tomas, who kept the programme seamless, assisted with security, even cleared the crowd when a PWA had a seizure -- admirable angels working in the background.

Employment: The Autism Advantage

April 2 was unanimously declared by the United Nations General Assembly as World Autism Awareness Day (A/RES/62/139) to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of children and adults, who are affected by autism, so they can lead full and meaningful lives.
Employment poster

It is estimated that more than 80% of adults with autism are unemployed -- this is the crux of why this year's theme is "Employment: The Autism Advantage." Research suggests that employers are missing out on abilities that that people on the autism spectrum have in greater abundance than “neurotypical” workers do – such as, heightened abilities in pattern recognition and logical reasoning, as well as a greater attention to detail.

The Philippines shares the many hurdles that global community needs to overcome to unleash this potential. We need to work on the shortage of vocational training, the inadequate support with job placement, and the pervasive discrimination.

The UN Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon shared his thoughts:

"We are here to call for greater access and work opportunities for persons with autism. While there has been a good deal of progress, much more needs to be done.

I am hugely encouraged by the growing public awareness of autism spectrum disorders and the improvement in public services to many of those affected. World Autism Awareness Day not only fosters greater understanding, it empowers parents into seeking early intervention therapies and calls for the full integration of persons with autism into society. It also invites policy-makers to encourage schools to open their doors to students with autism. With adequate support, they can -- and should -- be educated in the heart of their communities.

This year, my wife [Yoo Soon-taek] and I are delighted to launch an employment “Call to Action,” inviting businesses to make concrete commitments to employ people on the autism spectrum. We encourage public offices, corporations, and small businesses to have a closer look at the way they perceive people with autism, to take the time to learn about the condition and to create life-changing opportunities.

People with autism have enormous potential. Most have remarkable visual, artistic or academic skills. Thanks to the use of assistive technologies, non-verbal persons with autism can communicate and share their un-tapped capabilities. Recognizing the talents of persons on the autism spectrum, rather than focusing on their weaknesses, is essential to creating a society that is truly inclusive.

Yet even where awareness is high, more than 80 per cent of adults with autism are unemployed. That is why it is so important for companies to understand their unique and often exceptional skills, and to enable work environments where they can excel.

This requires appropriate vocational training and adequate support alongside a recruitment process that can allow people to successfully integrate into workforces around the world."

Blessing of Autism Families

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. This year, it also falls on an important Christian holiday, Maundy Thursday.

We invite ASP members and the rest of the autism advocacy community to join us at 5:30pm, on the steps of the Quezon Memorial Circle for a simple ecumenical prayer assembly where persons with autism, siblings, parents, government officials, and professionals will gather to share their hopes and dreams for all who live with autism. Following our personal prayers will be a community blessing by religious leaders.

Hardin ng mga Bulaklak. Entrance is after Quezon Avenue, across East Avenue.

Participants are requested to:

1. Wear green shirts, preferably an Angels Walk shirts (a security measure) and in case of cloudly weather, an umbrella;
2. Bring a foldable chair or mat to sit on;
3. Bring one candle (with a wind guard) for each participant and matches/lighter;
4. Familiarize yourselves with our community song "One Little Candle".

"One Little Candle"

It is better to light just one little candle
Than to stumble in the dark.
Better far that you light just one little candle,
All you need is a tiny spark.
If we'd all say a prayer that the world would be free,
A wonderful dawn of a new day we'd see
And if everyone lit just one little candle,
What a bright world this would be.

What is the color of autism advocacy?

the different colors of autism advocacy
Here are the colors often associated with autism and autism advocacy:

Green. The Autism Society Philippines brandishes the color green as an homage to the nurturing, growth and hope that lives in families who care for loved ones with autism. Green has been in our logo and our collaterals since 1989 -- over 25 years!

Blue. The Light It Up Blue Campaign is a project of Autism Speaks, which aims to illuminate iconic landmarks, communities, businesses and homes across the globe with blue lights. Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright, grandparents of a child with autism. Their long-time friend Bernie Marcus donated $25 million to help financially launch the organization. Since then, Autism Speaks has grown into a global organization which popularized the use of the blue puzzle piece to represent autism.

Rainbow. World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD), celebrated each year on April 2, was adopted by the United Nations in 2007 to acknowledge autism as a growing global health crisis. Autism is one of only three health issues to be recognized with its own day by the United Nations. In parallel, self-advocates promote April as World Autism Acceptance Month where they clamor for action beyond awareness of the neurological condition. The logos of both celebrate the colors of the rainbow spectrum.

Autism advocacy knows many colors, in the same way individuals on the spectrum are unique in their strengths and challenges. Defining the color of autism advocacy is secondary to the message we send the world: Many years after the autism was first diagnosed, advocates should labor beyond awareness and call for acceptance, appreciation and inclusion of the world's growing population of individuals with this neuro-developmental condition.

ASP advocates in green light it up blue

ASP joined the world in the celebration of World Autism Awareness Day, taking to heart the words UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon -- “This year’s World Autism Awareness Day is a chance to celebrate the creative minds of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and to renew our pledge to help them realize their great potential.”

The celebration in the Philippines was marked by a short program at SM Mall of Asia and a walk from the mall up to the scenic MOA Globe. ASP was represented by the National Office and members of Makati, Pasay, Novaliches, Parañaque, UP CAMP, and Tandang Sora chapters -- comprising the largest contingent.

Talk N’ Text players, Jimmy Alapag and Harvey Carey joined the participants in the walk, eliciting smiles from their fans. FIBA World Cup-bound Smart Gilas Team, Alapag posted in his Instagram account his message: “@jalapag3 Honored to be a part of the 7th World Autism Awareness Day today at Mall of Asia. #LightItUpBlue.”

The highlight of the night was the lighting of the scenic MOA Globe in blue, similar to other scenic places around the world. The participants erupted in cheers. When asked how they felt lighting up the MOA Globe in blue, four mothers of PWAs said that it symbolizes unity.

“My emotion was raised to the fullest when the globe was lighted showing the different government agencies, organizations and sectors involve in upholding the rights of PWAs,” says Ciony Torralba, a mother of Patrick and Secretary of ASP Tandang Sora.

7th World Autism Awareness Day with banner

“The most awaited moment, the lighting of the MOA Globe brought unexplained joy to the hearts of the people who witness the event, specially to the families of PWAs, because from that moment on, we knew that people would begin to really took notice, and care about the plight of Persons with Autism,” added Mrs. Cristobal.

“Masaya at napakaganda ng globe nang mailawan na. Salamat sa pagkakaisa ng mga ASP members,” said ASP member Benigna Nava.

“Nakakatuwa na bukod sa ASP, meron pang ibang grupo na tumutulong para ipaalam sa mundo na mayrong ganitong komunidad (autism) na dapat irespeto. Sana dumami pa ang grupo ang magkaroon ng malasakit, lalo government,” ASP member Delia Panti observed.

DIWA Partylist Representative, Emmeline Aglipay, a sibling to a PWA, addressed the advocates: “People with autism can change the world. People with autism can live lives full of hardship. People with autism can cover every point in between extremes. It's important for people to know that there are many types of people with autism, that each of them is an individual who is not and cannot be defined by a label."

“You’re not a lesser kind of person if you have autism, you’re not a worse kind of person if you have autism — you’re just different, and while it’s always challenging to stand out in society, to not be the same as most people, it doesn’t mean that you are capable of any less than someone who is quote-unquote “normal,” she added.

CWA explores Science at the Mind Museum

ASP UP CAMP Manila families (6 CWA, 2 grandmothers, 3 mothers, 1 father, 2 guardians, 4 siblings) visited The Mind Museum for a chance to explore science as a community last 03 April 2014. The activity allowed the CWA families some time to bond, and let the kids explore more of the world.

ASP UPCAMP in Mind Museum

The children with autism, their guardians and their siblings had a great time scouring each portion of the museum. Some of the exhibits caught the attention of some CWAs (like the rotating kaleidoscope, sounds of space, spinning tunnel) so much that they would go back to it again and again. Since the museum is interactive, the families were free to try each exhibit. There were also short movies in the planetarium and in mini theater that teaches about outer space and Earth’s history. Before and after the tour of the museum, the participants also played at the Science in the Park playground where the kids enjoyed the different slides, bubble machines and other displays. “Visitors learn science by rediscovering anew, through play, the wonder of nature’s elements: sunlight, wind, water and greenery. The park consists of four main play pockets: Water, Math, Music, and Living.”

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD). Children with autism are not meant to be locked up in their houses. We parents need to expose them to the community, to learn more of the world and the people around them. Through interactions with these kids can we understand them more.

This article is a contribution of Jenette Rodriguez, Secretary of ASP UP Camp.

This year’s World Autism Awareness Day is a chance to celebrate the creative minds of people with Autism Spectrum Disorders, and to renew our pledge to help them realize their great potential.

I treasure my meetings with individuals affected by autism – parents, children, teachers and friends. Their strength is inspiring. They deserve all possible opportunities for education, employment and integration.

To measure the success of our societies, we should examine how well those with different abilities, including persons with autism, are integrated as full and valued members.

Education and employment are key. Schools connect children to their communities. Jobs connect adults to their societies. Persons with autism deserve to walk the same path. By including children with different learning abilities in mainstream and specialized schools, we can change attitudes and promote respect. By creating suitable jobs for adults with autism, we integrate them into society.

At this time of economic constraint, governments should continue to invest in services that benefit persons with autism. When we empower them, we benefit current and future generations.

Tragically, in many parts of the world, these individuals are denied their fundamental human rights. They battle discrimination and exclusion. Even in places where their rights are secured, too often they still have to fight for basic services.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities provides a strong framework for action to create a better world for all.

World Autism Awareness Day is about more than generating understanding; it is a call to action. I urge all concerned to take part in fostering progress by supporting education programmes, employment opportunities and other measures that help realize our shared vision of a more inclusive world.

ASP Celebrates 6th World Autism Awareness Day

Autism Society Philippines joins the whole world in celebrating the 6th World Autism Awareness last 2 April 2013. ASP started the day with an opening of the “Exhibit of Artworks of Persons with Autism” at the lobby of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Central Office in Quezon City. The artworks exhibited were the winning and special entries of the on the “Spot Painting Contest” of ASP last January during the 17th National Autism Consciousness Week. The exhibit in partnership with DENR and the support of the Philippine Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine ran from April 2 to 5.

A lecture on “Stem Cell Therapy and Autism” was conducted by Dr. Tippy Tanchanco, a developmental pediatrician at the conference room of the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) in Quezon City later that day. The lecture was attended by parents, professionals and employees of CWC, and delivered in partnership with the sub-committee on Children with Disabilities. Ms. Brenda Vigo, the Executive Director of CWC welcomed the participants.

In another corner of Metro Manila, an ASP contingent joined the talk on “Autism and Its Medical Aspect” by Dr. Ermenilda Avendaño, a neuro-developmental pediatrician at SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City. The talk was sponsored by the National Working Committee of the 6th World Autism Awareness Day where ASP is a member. It was followed by the opening of the exhibit of the art works of person with autism and the activities of the different agencies who are members of the working committee.

The talk was followed by a walk towards the symbolic SM Globe that served as the icon for autism awareness every April 2. SM mall goers cheered as participants of the walk led by the SM marching band with their respective banners and leaflets passed through the walkways going to the globe.

ASP Dream Girls Thara and Nica entertained the guests and participants of the event with their repertoire of songs before the countdown for the lighting of the giant globe. The symbolic lighting was led by Ms. Annie Garcia of SM, Assistant Secretary Ubial of the Department of Health, Undersecretary Montaño of DSWD, Director Carmen Zubiaga of NCDA and Director Celia Yangco of the Autism Hearts Foundation Philippines. The lighting of the SM giant globe was part of the worldwide Light It Up Blue initiative spearheaded by Autism Speaks to promote awareness on autism that now affects 1 in every 88 children in the US.

ASP joins UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s appeal to “continue to work hand-in-hand with persons with autism spectrum disorders, helping them to cultivate their strengths while addressing the challenges they face so they can lead the productive lives that are their birthright”.

2013 World Autism Awareness Day Message of UN Sec. Gen. Ban Ki-Moon

Mr. Ban Ki Moon

World Autism Awareness Day has succeeded in calling greater international attention to autism and other developmental disorders that affect millions of people worldwide.

The current session of the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a new resolution on this issue, demonstrating a commitment to help affected individuals and families. The resolution encourages Member States and others to strengthen research and expand their delivery of health, education, employment and other essential services.

The Executive Board of the World Health Assembly will also take up the subject of autism spectrum disorders at its forthcoming session in May.

This international attention is essential to address stigma, lack of awareness and inadequate support structures. Current research indicates that early interventions can help persons with autistic conditions to achieve significant gains in their abilities. Now is the time to work for a more inclusive society, highlight the talents of affected people and ensure opportunities for them to realize their potential.

The General Assembly will hold a high-level meeting on 23 September to address the conditions of more than one billion persons with disabilities, including those with autism spectrum disorders. I hope leaders will seize this opportunity to make a meaningful difference that will help these individuals and our human family as a whole.

Let us continue to work hand-in-hand with persons with autism spectrum disorders, helping them to cultivate their strengths while addressing the challenges they face so they can lead the productive lives that are their birthright.

Ban Ki-moon

WAAD is needed for Autism?

By JR Tan, Person with Autism

World Autism Awareness Day (or WAAD) was created by a resolution from the United Nations General Assembly last 2008, to celebrate April 2 annually. This celebration is intended to give access to services to people with autism like me. It is also intended to showcase the talents belonging to this disability group and not to look down on them as second-class citizens or as "worthless".

JR Tan during his talk at the 3rd Regional Conference on Autism
held at Cagayan de Oro, hosted by ASP Cagayan de Oro Chapter.

Every year, various people with autism are invited to the AutiSMusical event to sing or play musical instruments. They have a passion for music and want to use them as their gifts to advocate for their disability. In other words, people's perception on people with autism may be changed, although some may not believe it or be convinced at first.

There are also some stalls that sell merchandise made by people with autism - they have crafted those with their hands, with the assistance of their teachers or other mentors. Does this mean that they are lesser a person? They're not! They are just promoting their abilities through their art.

People with autism should be given the proper dignity and respect by not vilifying or exposing them to public ridicule. Being a part of this disability group, I believe that we should be given a bright future to be productive citizens and not confine us to our limitations.

On the other hand, some families of people with autism despair that they do not have adequate resources to send their children to therapy or special schools. Although there are public schools that give special education to people with autism, these are not enough.

For those needing or seeking therapies or other special education needs, these services must be available to all, and not be concentrated only in Metro Manila. However, financial resources are necessary to provide these services.

Autism is growing fast, needing more attention, especially to those who live in far-flung areas. I strongly urge for an affordable and readily-available educational and therapy services for those needing them.
