“Beautiful Pain” shines light on autism acceptance

The film “Beautiful Pain” traces the emotional journey of a family towards acceptance of their son’s autism. The autism advocacy community came out to support the Philippine gala premiere of “Beautiful Pain” at the SM Megamall Cinema 1.

The image shows a white drawing of a boy with a whole black background.
Beautiful Pain Movie Poster

The film, which represented Malaysia at the 89th Academy Awards and the 74th Golden Globe Awards, is a deliberate, tender study of autism and human nature. Director Tunku Mona Riza has been gratified by the response by the global autism community. “This film has become a voice for them,” Mona told journalists at the film’s Oscar screening earlier in the year. The filmmaker researched on autism for more than two years and worked with advocates at the National Autism Society of Malaysia, resulting in the instructional simplicity in the handling of autism as an allied medical subject matter.

“Redha” is a Malay word with no accurate English translation (much like Tagalog’s “utang na loob”) – “joyful surrender to God’s will” comes close. “Filipinos find connections in “kurot-puso” stories,” Mona Magno-Veluz, National President of the Autism Society Philippines. “The film will help the public understand what persons with autism go through. By sharing this film with the mainstream Filipino audience – this synthesis of the experiences of many families who live and love with autism regardless of color, religion or social strata -- ASP hopes to inspire acceptance, accommodation and appreciation of persons with autism, towards a genuinely autism-inclusive Philippines.” According to ASP, 1 in 100 Filipinos are on the autism spectrum.

The film revolves around Danial, who lives with his parents Alina and Razlan in an island resort in Malaysia, where the early signs of his autism play out. The lead characters’ strained emotional bond is balanced by the kindness of Alina who is accepting of her son’s diagnosis. But Alina is plagued by a misplaced sense of responsibility for Danial’s autism, even ignoring her health in self-reproach. Through her journey, she finds a supportive network of advocates in her college friends, her sister, her husband’s co-workers, her specialists and even a stranger in a gas station. The reluctant Razlan struggles with his son’s condition, resulting in bursts of anger and frustration. He eventually finds inspiration in the perspective of a stranger, a swimming coach, who sees what is amazing in his son, instead of what is missing. Over the span of eight years, the film paints a portrait of awakening, hope and redemption.

The Philippine gala premiere held at the SM Megamall Cinema 1 was attended by 600 viewers, despite it being a rainy, traffic-ridden Tuesday night. Honored guests included Tunku Mona Riza (Director, Beautiful Pain), Haris Sulong (Producer, Current Pictures), Wilson Tieng (President, Solar Entertainment), Engr. Bien Mateo (Program Head, SM Cares), Paul Daza (Former Governor, Northern Samar), Mirana Medina (Filmmaker and Disability Advocate), Waya Araos-Wijangco (Executive Chef, Gourmet Gypsy), Michelle Aventajado (Country Director, Best Buddies), Chelo Banal-Formoso (Editor, Philippine Daily Inquirer), Harvey Chua (General Manager, Adphoto), Cherry Concepcion (AVP for HR, SM Savemore), Kimberly Cruz (President, Dohtonbori), Archie David (Executive Director, Project TEACH), Gigi Daza (Founder, Nail Tropics), Francis Dimalanta (Developmental Pediatrician), Rachel Harrison (Founder, Zambawood), Anthony Lozada (President, Bert Lozada Swim School), Wennah Marquez (Chief, Mandaluyong PDAD), Mirana Medina (Film maker), Candy Pangilinan (Film/Television Actress), Kaye Samson (Executice Director, Special Olympics), Rene Sarmiento (Former Commissioner, COMELEC), among other dear friends and supporters. The event was made possible through the generosity of our sponsors: Mossimo, DN Steel Group of Companies, JAC Motors, Ramos Co Logistic, Perlita So, Ardex Motors, Reggie Jolingan and Republic Biscuit Corporation.
A partnership between the Autism Society Philippines, Current Pictures Sdn. Bhd., Solar Pictures, SM Cinema, the ASEAN Autism Network and the National Autism Society of Malaysia, “Beautiful Pain” will be shown in SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia and SM North EDSA on 19 – 25 July 2017 – in commemoration of the Philippine National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

In line with the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Autism Society Philippines Laguna Chapter held Festival of Arts on the 6 December 2015 at DL Umali Hall, University of the Philippines Los Baños in Laguna.

Festival of Arts people with ASP Laguna Officers

There was also a special participation of Binibining Laguna 2015 Justine Mae San Jose on the latter part of the program. At that point, she and her team gave cash donations and free shirts to the kids courtesy of Pascual Group of Companies. These were the product of her fund raising photo shoot in Doha, Qatar. The beneficiaries are Autism Society Philippines Laguna Chapter and the victims of Typhoon Yolanda.

The program ended with “Magkasama Tayo sa Kwento ng Pasko,” sung by the performing and visual artists of Festival of Arts.

The event would not be possible without the help of Rotary Club Los Baños Makiling Chapter which celebrates their sixteenth anniversary and the participation of the partner student organizations, Circle K Club of UPLB and UPLB ComArts Society. ASP opens its new home on 11th Jamboree

After 20 years at the ML Building along Kamias Road, the Autism Society Philippines opened its new home to the public on 01 August 2015, Saturday at its new address: #9 11th Jamboree Street corner Scout Fuentebella, Brgy. Sacred Heart in Quezon City.

Some trustees in front of our new home

The blessing and open house was dubbed the “ASP Jambor-A,” a pun on the word Jamboree which appears on the street address. “It was serendipitous that our new address is on Jamboree Street.” Ms. Mona Magno-Veluz, ASP National President, mentioned in her speech. “Jamboree is a large gathering of people from different places to celebrate; and that is what we want our new HQ to be. We want to celebrate the awesomeness of people with autism in this building. To our dear parents, siblings, children, adults who live with autism, this is your home.”

Cutting the ribbon

Ms. Carmen Zubiaga led the ribbon-cutting ceremony; and she was joined by the very individual who fuel our advocacy. The NCDA chief was joined by Mike Almendrala, Kendrick Cheng, Gelo Go, Gio Koe, Angelo So, Patrick So, and Carl Veluz in cutting the ceremonial ribbon.

In her speech, Ms. Carmen turned teary-eyed, as speaking to ASP parents reminds her of the passion of her own mother, who fought for her rights as a PWD, when she was not yet able to. She commended the National leaders of ASP who are at the forefront of parent advocacy in the disability sector.

In the afternoon, Teacher Ichie and Teacher Tess from Bridges Foundation conducted an art workshop. Kids with autism and siblings drew their version of angels. Their art works were displayed prominently in the ASP training room.

The art workshop

Trustee Evelyn Go was treated to a pleasant surprise when the ASP family broke out into song, greeting her the happiest of birthdays. Dashing young men on the spectrum then took turns offering our blushing celebrant a flower and a dance.

Evelyn and ASP Project Assistant Mico

Ms. Grace Adviento and Ms. Dang Koe, ASP National leaders, hosted the 2nd Autama Quiz Night. Education majors from Miriam College, led by their instructor, Ms. Susan Morillo, played a fun, visual game show with adults with autism. The day was topped off with videoke singing and what seemed like a never-ending series of we-fies.

Autama 2

The celebration of the new office would not have been complete without the show of appreciation for the many friends and donors who made the new ASP National HQ a destination for autism advocates -- Mayor Dahlia Loyola, Evelyn Go, Peng So, Helen Cheng, Gina and Lito Bermudo, Uratex Corporation and many other kind and generous friends. Thank you to the many ASP members and friends who came over to help us warm our new home --- Ms. Mirana Media, Municipality of Carmona, NCDA, AD|HD Society of the Philippines, Association for Adults with Autism, Best Buddies, Unilab Foundation, May God bless us and the advocacy we share!

ASP hosts Seminar on “The Art of The Innocents”

The Autism Society Philippines hosted a seminar on The Art of The Innocents last 14 March 2015 at the Bridges Foundation, attended by parents, students and professionals including teachers from ASP Catanduanes Chapter.

Ms. Maria Theresa P. Aficial opened the seminar with an activity to know how well the participants perform when it came to art. The participants were asked to create something by using the pattern presented to them. She explained how important art is to children with special needs, including autism. She mentioned that art came from personal experiences, how we looked at ourselves and our own perception of our environment. Teacher Tess showed different works of their students using different kinds of materials, like clay, water color and oil pastel. Teacher Tess asked the participants to form groups; and they were given art materials that they can use to describe how summer looked like to them. Some of the participants choose to use clays and even yarn to create a very creative way to describe summer.

Participants of the seminar

After the activity, Ms. Ma. Cecilia Zamora, explained that through drawing, children with special needs can express their own self through art. She mentioned that art is a form of self- expression. In teaching children, we should always give them motivation to perform and help them build their self-esteem. Teacher Ichie mentioned that when it comes to art, we should not have limits. There should be no rules when it comes to shapes, colors and materials, so they can really express how they feel. Process is more important than the output.

Art of the Innocents is a program for cultivating creativity and self expression in persons with developmental disabilities through visual arts. In this seminar parents and teachers will learn how to use Art, not to improve fine motor skills, but as a mode of expressive language, as a venue for social interaction, as a means to improve focus and attention and as a form of therapy. Participants will be inspired by the actual artworks of students with special needs from the time they began up to the present. Hear how the program has made a difference in their lives.

The first part of the seminar will be an introduction on the principles and process of the program with video and photo samples of the process and of the artworks. The second half of the session will be a hands-on workshop on how to conduct art sessions with persons with special needs.

Artismo: Kulay at Himig ng Autismo

The National Autism Consciousness Week culminated with "Artismo: Kulay at Himig ng Autismo,” celebrating the artistry of young adults with autism at The Podium in Ortigas last 31 January 2015. The Atrium was transformed into an art gallery featuring the visual art of JA Tan, Thomas Perez Diaz and the PWAs of ASP Baguio.

Despite the string of events that week, the leadership of the Autism Society Philippines and supporters came to the event in their Filipiniana best, a fitting honor to the young people with autism who have inspired our 26-year old advocacy.

The autism-inclusive Philippines National Anthem opened the event, followed by a solemn prayer from one of our featured artists Thomas Perez Diaz. Hon. Carmen Zubiaga, NCDA Executive Director, welcomed the guests and gave a perspective on how the week has made an impact not just on the cause of those with autism; but of other marginalized PWDs.

Ms. Mona Magno-Veluz, ASP National President then introduced the credentials of the featured visual artists JA Tan and Thomas Perez-Diaz who both garnered a standing ovation from the appreciative crowd. Ms. Vell Baria, a young lady with autism garnered much admiration for her rendition of traditional Filipinos songs. Ms. Lilet Lavina emceed the morning's affair.

The Autism Society Philippines Baguio chapter gave special recognition, not only to their pool of talented photographers; but also the angels who have helped ensure the success of ASP's Colors of A Spectrum Workshop over the years -- Mr. Ompong Tan, Mr. John Chua, Canon Philippines and SM Cares.

The "Artismo: Ang Kulay at Himig ng Autismo" ran from January 31 to February 1, 2015 at The Podium, Atrium.

A kind-hearted individual who also has a brother in the Autism Spectrum provided the art materials and snacks for this event. It is one of her dreams to organize a watercolor workshop for CWAs to help them and their siblings express themselves through painting and thereby create a bond between them.

The parents of the participants are very thankful for this opportunity given to their children. They are very proud of their kids for their achievements in that activity.

ASP Diliman holds a Walk and Art Summer Camp

The warm breeze of summer inspired the ASP Diliman moms to try another activity for Summer 2014. ASP Diliman spearheaded a Walk and Art Camp in UP Diliman last May 15, 2014 for Teens with Autism (TWAs) Jason Inanuran, JV Legarto, Macky Palomares and Vincent Benoza, together with their supportive moms and siblings. These boys braved the afternoon heat to the enthusiastic cheers of their moms, siblings and the UP SPED Soc volunteers.

PWAs and volunteers from the UP SPED SOC

The canopy of acacia and caimito trees around the UP College of Human Kinetics (CHK) shaded the young men in their sketching activity, as warm-up before the walk. Mom Len Inanuran prompted the boys to draw ‘what they see.’ True to the spirit of youth, they drew not only trees, but also the blazing sun, clear blue skies, walking people and even the passing buses along Commonwealth Avenue. After the sketching, volunteers from the UP SPED SOC guided them in the warm up exercises and finally their walkathon. Indeed, the boys have grown up as teens with strong stamina to finish the 2.2 kilometer UP Academic Oval.

Mommy Resy commented that the Walk and Art Camp showed how well these teeners have matured over the years. They can follow instructions better, showing improvement in their mental faculties and fine motor skills. Gone are the days when their hands were guided to correctly hold pencils or crayons. Their drawings correctly showed the recognizable features of trees, people, and clouds, among others. This is a big contrast to the doodles and dots of yesteryears. As expected, they wore big smiles as their photos were taken side by side with their art work and their peers. Gone are the reclusive boys who did not care about others or “walang pakialam sa mundo.” They borrowed and shared crayons with one another.

After the walk, it was delightful to hear them say “pagod na at gutom na.” They can now correctly express their feelings. They showed confidence in themselves as they enjoyed climbing the tree house, and playing in the swing, seesaw, monkey bars, balancing rails, among others.

From the successive summer sessions of swimming, basketball, soccer and now walking, these TWA’s have grown up to be young men with robust bodies, strong hands and feet, and good eye and body coordination. But more importantly, they have peers whom they trust and call friends.

A Father’s Day lunch get-together held last June 14, 2014 culminated the 2014 summer for ASP Diliman where the kids played basketball and enjoyed lunch with their parents.

A first at Project HeART

Members of ASP Tacloban Chapter gathered for Project HeART, an art psychosocial intervention program, as post-disaster response for the Yolanda survivors in Leyte. This unique event was funded by Metrobank Foundation and held last 4-6 June 2014 at the Eastern Visayas State University.

Mommy Fajardo (in stripes) and her son Ruvic with ASP National President Jan Peña, Muneer Peña and other Project HeART participants in Tacloban.

I’m very glad to have been a part of it. It was a first time experience for most of the participants to be gathered around with fellow special children for one movement. There was an excitement in each and everyone including the parents and guardians.

For the Group 8 years old and above, Day 1 was to draw their own profile and it gave them freedom to introduce themselves in the way they wished using mixed media. Day 2 was to etch "who or what supports them" using 3 square boards with oil pastel. They had to think hard to be sure what or who really are giving them full support in their daily living; because there's no erasure in etching technique thus making them feel confident realizing the reinforcements they already have. The last day was also in mixed media but in a relief form or in three-dimensions. Participants were given a board where they can create a 3D work of the surroundings or an ideal environment they wish to have. Through this, they were able to use their imaginations and their outside world experiences.

I would like to thank the Autism Society Philippines together with the sponsor, Metrobank Foundation for spearheading such activity. This will be a great help for my son in order for him to develop his skills and talents needed for his development. This will pave way for him to have social exposure in order for him and for the public realize their potentials as a member of their society and not to be ridiculed with their disability.
