“Beautiful Pain” shines light on autism acceptance

The film “Beautiful Pain” traces the emotional journey of a family towards acceptance of their son’s autism. The autism advocacy community came out to support the Philippine gala premiere of “Beautiful Pain” at the SM Megamall Cinema 1.

The image shows a white drawing of a boy with a whole black background.
Beautiful Pain Movie Poster

The film, which represented Malaysia at the 89th Academy Awards and the 74th Golden Globe Awards, is a deliberate, tender study of autism and human nature. Director Tunku Mona Riza has been gratified by the response by the global autism community. “This film has become a voice for them,” Mona told journalists at the film’s Oscar screening earlier in the year. The filmmaker researched on autism for more than two years and worked with advocates at the National Autism Society of Malaysia, resulting in the instructional simplicity in the handling of autism as an allied medical subject matter.

“Redha” is a Malay word with no accurate English translation (much like Tagalog’s “utang na loob”) – “joyful surrender to God’s will” comes close. “Filipinos find connections in “kurot-puso” stories,” Mona Magno-Veluz, National President of the Autism Society Philippines. “The film will help the public understand what persons with autism go through. By sharing this film with the mainstream Filipino audience – this synthesis of the experiences of many families who live and love with autism regardless of color, religion or social strata -- ASP hopes to inspire acceptance, accommodation and appreciation of persons with autism, towards a genuinely autism-inclusive Philippines.” According to ASP, 1 in 100 Filipinos are on the autism spectrum.

The film revolves around Danial, who lives with his parents Alina and Razlan in an island resort in Malaysia, where the early signs of his autism play out. The lead characters’ strained emotional bond is balanced by the kindness of Alina who is accepting of her son’s diagnosis. But Alina is plagued by a misplaced sense of responsibility for Danial’s autism, even ignoring her health in self-reproach. Through her journey, she finds a supportive network of advocates in her college friends, her sister, her husband’s co-workers, her specialists and even a stranger in a gas station. The reluctant Razlan struggles with his son’s condition, resulting in bursts of anger and frustration. He eventually finds inspiration in the perspective of a stranger, a swimming coach, who sees what is amazing in his son, instead of what is missing. Over the span of eight years, the film paints a portrait of awakening, hope and redemption.

The Philippine gala premiere held at the SM Megamall Cinema 1 was attended by 600 viewers, despite it being a rainy, traffic-ridden Tuesday night. Honored guests included Tunku Mona Riza (Director, Beautiful Pain), Haris Sulong (Producer, Current Pictures), Wilson Tieng (President, Solar Entertainment), Engr. Bien Mateo (Program Head, SM Cares), Paul Daza (Former Governor, Northern Samar), Mirana Medina (Filmmaker and Disability Advocate), Waya Araos-Wijangco (Executive Chef, Gourmet Gypsy), Michelle Aventajado (Country Director, Best Buddies), Chelo Banal-Formoso (Editor, Philippine Daily Inquirer), Harvey Chua (General Manager, Adphoto), Cherry Concepcion (AVP for HR, SM Savemore), Kimberly Cruz (President, Dohtonbori), Archie David (Executive Director, Project TEACH), Gigi Daza (Founder, Nail Tropics), Francis Dimalanta (Developmental Pediatrician), Rachel Harrison (Founder, Zambawood), Anthony Lozada (President, Bert Lozada Swim School), Wennah Marquez (Chief, Mandaluyong PDAD), Mirana Medina (Film maker), Candy Pangilinan (Film/Television Actress), Kaye Samson (Executice Director, Special Olympics), Rene Sarmiento (Former Commissioner, COMELEC), among other dear friends and supporters. The event was made possible through the generosity of our sponsors: Mossimo, DN Steel Group of Companies, JAC Motors, Ramos Co Logistic, Perlita So, Ardex Motors, Reggie Jolingan and Republic Biscuit Corporation.
A partnership between the Autism Society Philippines, Current Pictures Sdn. Bhd., Solar Pictures, SM Cinema, the ASEAN Autism Network and the National Autism Society of Malaysia, “Beautiful Pain” will be shown in SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia and SM North EDSA on 19 – 25 July 2017 – in commemoration of the Philippine National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week.

Alyana comes to Bicol

ASP Naga City held an “Alyana” film viewing activity at the Function Hall of Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology last 13 December 2014. The ASP National Office’s Ms. Mary Janette Peña, filmmaker Ms. Mirana Medina, and PDAO - Naga City’s Mr. Christopher S. Molin supported the event. Educational institutions in the Bicol Region such as University of Nueva Caceres, Ateneo de Naga University, Partido State University, St. Joseph School, Naga Central School II, SPED Center and individual moviegoers came to see the documentary.
Film Maker Mirana Medina

Through the documentary, parents and future special education teachers were enlighten regarding the different aspects and issues about autism. They were interested in asking about the intervention tips in handling children, since intervention professionals are difficult to come by in Region V. Even if speech and behavioural therapy is available, majority cannot afford the services. The future SPED teachers were amazed and inspired by the different teaching strategies implemented in order for the children with autism to be engaged in family, school, and community.

Film maker Mirana Medina covered the same event in her blog:
As part of Autism Society Philippines-Naga City Chapter’s autism awareness and advocacy campaign, Alyana — A Study of Autism in the Philippines, my documentary on autism will be screened at the Bicol State College of Applied Sciences and Technology in Naga City, Bicol Province. The showing is scheduled tomorrow, December 13 from 8 am. To represent the National Office is Jan Peña, ASP Board of Trustee member. She left Manila last night for Naga City.

Mr. Santos Braga, president of ASP-Naga City Chapter is hosting the event. The group believes that the film will help raise their community’s awareness on the condition of persons with autism. And just like them, I know that our society will find it easier to embrace their children once they get to know what exactly autism is.

Alyana, by the way is my grandniece with autism. The film however, is not only about her. It is about ALL children/persons with autism. It covers from low function to high function / Asperger Syndrome cases like Gabby Atienza. He interestingly described his own condition as an aspie. Symptoms and causes, the plight of parents, even the doctor’s explanations and thoughts are included for better understanding of autism. It will be the second time around for Alyana in Naga.

Cebu’s first sensory friendly movie screening

August 20 marked an important day for families living with autism; because it marked the first sensory friendly movie shown in Cebu. SM Cares offered children with special needs and their families a chance to experience seeing a film on the big screen -- “Planes: Fire and Rescue.” Over 225 special kids from 11 special schools in Cebu lined up in SM Cinema 1 at 8:30am, accompanied by 275 family members, caregivers, volunteers from Velez College PT/OT, Rotary Clubs, and Reach Center staff. The event was overseen by ASP Cebu Chapter President Kathy Castellano and Adviser Sandra Espina.

ASP Cebu Sensory-Friendly Movie in line

The challenge for children with ASD in coping in the movie theatre, involves potential sensory stimulation overload from the dark environment, the loud sounds, the bright lights and the cold room temperature. However, on that day, SM Cares provided 1) a friendly and acceptable environment for the special kids to get up, move around and even make little noise, 2) warm lighting instead of total darkness, 3) lowered the volume of special effect and music, and 4) less trailers.

About the Contributor: Sandra Espina served as the ASP Cebu Chapter President from 2009 to 2014 and is currently the chapter's adviser. She is the Managing Director of Ivory Properties. Sandra and her spouse Joseph, Rotary District 3860 Governor, are parents to three boys. Zach, their youngest, is on the spectrum.

Autism Friendly for All Seasons

By Glenn Adviento

To seek continuous support from the local government, last 23 November 2009, ASP’s five active Batangas Chapters, through ASP Lipa Chapter adviser, Mary Ann Magsino Panganiban, set a courtesy call with Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto. With her are Ms. Raceli de Castro, ASP Batangas City Chapter Vice President and Ms. Lea Mayo, administrator of University of Batangas Special Children Foundation.

ASP National and Batangas Leaders during the courtesy call with Batangas Governor Vilma Santos-Recto

The ASP Batangas Chapter Leaders also requested ASP National Leaders to join the courtesy call in order to invite Gov. Vi to grace ASP’s 2010 Angels Walk for Autism. The Walk next year will be held in SM Mall of Asia’s Music Hall on January 24. For details, email autismphils@gmail.com.

The national contingent was composed of ASP National President Erlinda “Dang” Koe, Vice President Mary Grace Adviento, ASP Executive Director Ranil Sorongon, CWA Adrian Adviento and this author.

Avoiding the Monday morning rush hour, our team left on the dawn of November 23, as they would convene at 5:30 am at a fast food in North Avenue, Quezon City. During the entire travel from QC to Batangas, traffic was thankfully light, except for the Calamba-Sto Tomas Highway.

By 7:30 am, our team met with ASP Batangas Chapter representatives. Courteous staff ushered us inside the waiting hall of the Governor’s Palace. While waiting, we were served breakfast sandwiches paired with the famous Kapeng Barako ng Batangas and watched Batangas’ One Town, One Product Program, which aims to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs in localities.

The governor met us after attending the flag ceremonies. Her mere presence sets a 180 degree twist to the somber mood inside the hall. We were then ushered into the Conference Room. After exchanges of pleasantries, the Governor was interested to know about the rising incidence of autism in the country, particularly in Batangas.

The Batangas Governor, or Governor Vi is no stranger to autism. Before becoming a politician, she did a movie about a married couple going through acceptance of their autistic son, “Ipagpatawad Mo”. Click here to watch an excerpt of the film.

As part of the research for her role on the film, she read up on autism and observed the typical behaviors of an autistic child. And to our amazement, she still remembered one of her vital lines from the movie : "Di dapat sila ang pumasok sa mundo natin, kundi tayo dapat ang pumasok sa mundo nila,"she uttered.” That famous line bagged her the 1991 Urian Award for Best Actress Award.

We then extended our invitation to join ASP’s Angels Walk. She obliged to attend, as long as her schedule permits.

My son Adrian, gave a simple token of gratitude to the governor for allowing the showing of Alyana in Batangas City. Click here to know more.

After meeting with the Governor, we proceeded to Lipa City, where Governor Vi served as Mayor from 1998-2007. We made a stop-over at the Rehabilitation Department of the Mary Mediatrix Medical Center, which to our surprise, is at par with the leading hospitals in our country.

We would like to thank Governor Vi and ASP Lipa and ASP Batangas chapters for their continuing efforts in spreading autism awareness and we look forward to fruitful future endeavors, making Batangas “Autism Friendly for all Seasons”.
