Message from the ASP National President

Dear ASP Advocates,

The Autism Society Philippines released a survey to OFFICIAL members last March 30 via Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Viber, SMS and email; and we thank all who responded on-time to our call for information. The data became critical inputs to the ASP community needs analysis that followed.

For the 80 percent of the respondents who primarily needed help with challenges in the home and with daily activities for their children on the spectrum, we rolled out on-line services and projects such as the ECQ facilitation letters, “ASP Ask the Experts Live” and “ASP PweDay x ECQ.” We thank professionals, volunteers and participants who have stepped up to bring this vision to life.

For the 20 percent of the respondents who humbly called out for financial help, we immediately and quietly worked to find resources. Thanks to the generosity of private donors, we were able to send assistance to (1) OFFICIAL members who (2) responded to the survey ON-TIME and (3) EXPLICITLY asked for financial help. These are the three inclusion criteria for the assistance.

All that ASP does, all that we share, is meant for OUR CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM — their food, their medicines, their needs and their overall welfare.

The following chapters have members who received a small financial assistance from our generous private donors this week — ASP National, ASP Angeles, ASP Angono, ASP Antipolo, ASP Bacolod, ASP Bacoor, ASP Baguio, ASP Binangonan, ASP CDO, ASP CSFP, ASP Davao, ASP Imus, ASP Lagro, ASP Lemery, ASP Mandaluyong, ASP Marikina, ASP Molino, ASP Olongapo, ASP Pasay, ASP San Mateo, ASP Tandang Sora, ASP Taytay at ASP UP-CAMP Manila.

We appreciate members who declined the financial assistance so we can stretch our small budget to reach those with a more profound need. Your small sacrifices have not gone unnoticed.

The ASP National leadership thanks you all for valuing and nurturing your continuous membership in ASP. We appreciate the commitment of members and chapters who do not let their memberships and accreditations lapse, and uphold ASP’s high governance standards.

Now, more than ever, we ask for your tangible support of ASP, maintaining chapter accreditations, staying engaged on-line and supporting others in our community. This will ensure the sustainability of our society’s efforts to adapt to the times, until we win over this crisis.

We will continue to strive to be innovative and relevant in our service of the ASP family. May God continue to bless our families and our shared advocacy!

In service,
MONA MAGNO-VELUZ
National President

Meltdowns and aggressive behaviors often occur with individuals on the autism spectrum. This is a way for them to communicate something that is personally distressing. This workshop will help participants understand the cause of crisis behaviors, will provide tips on deescalating behaviors before they become meltdowns and provide practical tips on how to avoid injury for both the persons on the autism spectrum and those around them when aggressive behaviors occur. Sensory Integration Strategies

What: Sensory Integration Strategies
When: 22 June 2019,9am - 12nn
Where: ASP National Headquarters (http://bit.ly/asp-map2)

Sensory Integration is about how our brain receives and processes sensory information so that we can do the things we need to do in our everyday life. Our brain interprets the information it receives, then uses all of this information to help us respond to our environment. Most persons with autism have problems with sensory integration and this manifests in odd or challenging behaviors. Participants will learn practical strategies that can help PWAs cope or overcome their sensory processing difficulties.

Yoga, Mindfulness and Autism

Common challenges children with ASD face are difficulty with expressive and receptive communication, sensory integration deficits and social/emotional challenges (understanding and recognizing facial expressions, social cues and their emotions as well as emotions of others). Many children ASD may also experience heightened levels of anxiety.

Recently, studies that have been done suggest that yoga can be of significant benefit to children with ASD. In addition to benefits typically associated with yoga such as increased strength, balance, coordination and flexibility, benefits such as increased social-emotional skills, language and communication, body awareness, self-regulation, focus and concentration and a reduction in anxiety, impulsive, obsessive, aggressive and self-stimulatory behaviors have also been noted.

Seminar on Translating Communication Goals in the Home/Family

More often than not, individuals diagnosed with autism are also diagnosed to have speech and/or language deficits that significantly affect their ability to communicate. Individuals receive a speech/language assessments and are then recommended to receive speech/language therapy services with various goals and objectives. With the various and sometimes numerous concerns in the speech/language development of children with autism, it can sometimes be overwhelming to navigate through the information and the responsibilities involved in speech/language therapy. Under the premise that family is always considered as the primary caregiver of the individual with autism, this seminar will discuss some principles involved in speech/language therapy and how to implement strategies to facilitate development of communication skills and to more effectively follow-through in the individual’s home setting.

Seminar on Autism-Friendly Learning Environment

30 June 2018, Saturday
9AM - 4PM

Structured teaching is a system for: organizing space; change of activities with schedules; work study systems to facilitate learning process; and material organization to promote independence. Its primary purpose is to improve adaptation of persons with autism by modifying or structuring the environment to accommodate learning deficits of those in the spectrum.

What distinguishes this seminar from others given on the same topic is the rich inclusion of application of structured teaching at home, from the resource persons’ personal experiences with their sons with autism and those of other families they met and students they taught. Three mothers/teachers will give actual examples emphasizing the need for consistent practice and collaboration between school teachers and carers at home.

Participants will be given the opportunity to design a structured environment for their child/student through facilitated workshops.

Intervention Models for Children with Autism

Teacher Patricia Yap, a special educator explained the principles, processes and practices in the intervention models for children with autism -- such as Developmental Individual differences Relationship (DIR)/Floortime and the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) -- at the Autism Society Philippines National Headquarters last 24 March 2018.

The image shows seminar participants formed into small groups sharing stories about their experiences of having a child with autism.
Intervention Models for Children with Autism Participants

Teacher Patricia explained each of the six developmental capacities of children, the milestones they need to master and how these can impact a healthy emotional and intellectual growth of every child. She also explained how these capacities are affected by individual differences, whether biologically based or family, community or culture based. It was pointed out that it is important to identify the child’s and the parents and/or teacher’s interactive style. The parent and/or the teacher should adapt to the child’s style to develop a good relationship. This good relationship is the mechanism for learning for all children to develop and learn through relationships with parents and other trusted adults.

Floortime is a technique or a type of play where the parent or the teacher get down on the floor and work with the child to master each of the developmental capacities. The technique involves following the child’s natural interests, at the same time challenging the child towards greater mastery of the social, emotional and intellectual capacities. Children, young adults and adults with developmental challenges especially those on the autism spectrum disorder can benefit from Floortime. A teacher, an occupational or speech therapists, a parent or anyone can be trained to deliver Floortime.

The six social-emotional stages of development were each discussed in details. The six stages are as follows (1) regulation and shared attention (2) engagement and relatedness; intimacy and/or falling in love (3) two-way and purposeful communication (4) social problem solving/ complex communication (5) creative and meaningful use of ideas/emotional ideas (6) emotional and logical thinking. Criteria and goal for each stage were discussed in details.

As every intervention model, Floortime also begins with an assessment. The child is observed to identify his/her developmental level. Which developmental capacity is mastered fully or partially and which are not observed at all is noted. The child’s reactions and plan of actions towards a sensation and his/her learning relationship are also observed.

Floortime is done by following the child’s lead, and seeing what motivates him, then join him in whatever he is doing. As the child begin to recognize the adult’s presence, entice him into shared interaction, with challenge but his individual profile is taken into consideration..

Early Start Denver Model shares some common features with approaches like (1) Denver Model (2) Pivotal Response Training (PRT) (3) Applied Behavior Analysis. ESDM is a technique that develops children’s spontaneous tendency to approach and interact with others and their ability to engage with others. It targets the core deficits of Autism Spectrum Disorder and focuses on skills needed to accelerate development through hands-on and experiential learning. The model also focuses on quality relationships, affect and adult sensitivity and responsivity. The model is found to be effective in enhancing development in children with autism ages one to three years old.

ESDM can be implemented in any setting; at home, in an inclusive preschool, in a clinical office or intervention center by a parent, a teacher or a therapist. Teacher Patricia stresses the importance of data collection to evaluate the teaching efficacy and to adjust and maximize progress.

ESDM begins with an interview with the parents of the CWA. A curriculum checklist serves as a guide in developing the 12-week objective where teaching steps will be based. Data on these documents will constantly be referred to and updated accordingly. Teacher Patricia gives special attention to the importance of the set-up in starting an ESDM session. Set-up is where the parent or teacher/therapist identify materials and motivating activities to engage the child. ESDM sessions employ strategies and principles of ABA, PRT and Denver Model such as prompts, shaping of behaviors, functional behavior analysis, reinforcement, taking turns, following child's leads and adults' use of positive affect.

Short videos were played demonstrating how a Floortime, PRT and ESDM session takes place to reinforce understanding of each of the models discussed. Also, a pop quiz in between topics helped encourage participation and demonstrate learning.

Teacher Patricia divided the participants into groups to discuss their learning. Each shared their own stories and experiences with children with autism and how these intervention models can help them improve how they teach CWAs,

In closing, Teacher Patricia shared additional take home messages (a) no one intervention is better than the other (b) interventions should be individualized and tailored fit to the child’s needs and strengths (c) play and relationship are key components to an effective intervention for CWAs (d) parents/caregivers are the best people to provide interventions and should be their child’s case manager.

Participants shared what they thought about the seminar:

“Effective sequence of the topic. She did a very organized talk to the participants. Organized planning by the speaker.”

“The seminar is a fruitful way on exposing other options for parent & professionals.”

“Very helpful to my profession. New methods are discussed clearly. Speaker clearly and discussed topics well. Slides and handouts prepared are helpful.”

Pragmatic learning strategies for children with autism

Pragmatism, defined by John Dewey, is a view that rejected the dualistic epistemology and metaphysics of modern philosophy in favor of a naturalistic approach that viewed knowledge as arising from an active adaptation of the human organism to its environment. Michelle Garcia Winner emphasized Dewey’s pragmatic theory into social intervention by saying that cognition by social aspect is generally an intuitive process that allow children in the spectrum to consider the points of view, emotions, and intentions of others.

The image shows paricipants attending seminar presented by Ms. Kimberly Lim and Ms. Elinor Bautista.
The Participants of the Pragmatic Learning Strategies seminar
Kimberly Lim Geronimo and Elinor Bautista, speech and language pathologists, were speakers for the seminar conducted last 21 October 2017 at the ASP National Headquarters. They welcomed 87 participants. There, the goals were focused on the broader comprehension of the nature of pragmatics through the methodologies based on Winner’s propositions and assessments in social intervention.

The former elaborated the social thinking treatment methodology by her conceptual definitions explained in the abstract schemes while the latter differentiated expected and unexpected behavior by citing examples of certain scenarios, as well as the principles stated by rules. They elaborated the strategies for resolving pragmatic disorders involving visual perception, body language and facial expression, social language development, physical proximity and eye contacts, vocal intensity and prosody, conversational approaches, perspective taking, and reaction and overreaction.

They also clarified these by stating that when the pragmatic disorders became too inappropriate in the society, the children tend to cause exaggerations, provoking the thoughts induced in their thinking. The latter manifested her ideas when she fully generalized the social language development scenes by enhancing her schema on some situations while the former spontaneously elucidated the scenario to how language-based development and social interactions interconnect.

Participants comments include:

“Super duper worth it!”
“Anecdotal evidence of the intervention helpful. Speakers are approachable for questions.”
“Speakers are competent!”
