The Autism Society Philippines (ASP) is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to the well-being of persons on the autism spectrum disorder. We envision a society where Filipinos on the spectrum become the best of their potentials -- self-reliant, independent, productive, socially-accepted citizens of an Autism-OK Philippines.

Project Gourm-A: Cooking with Chef Dacki

Project Gourm-A [pronounced gur-'mey] is a program under the ASP A-OK Philippines campaign which aims to showcase skills of individuals on the spectrum in the food and restaurant industry. ASP is privileged to have partnered with Chef Waya Araos-Wijangco and Chef Dacki Sandiego for Project Gourm-A cooking class held at the Open Hands School for Applied Arts last 17 October 2015.

Chef Dacki quickly took control -- making an introduction of the kitchen and gave rules on how to handle the kitchen as well as to use utensils for safety. Chef Dacki divided 6 groups of PWA into 2 in each tables with stoves. Dacki showed them how to peel carrots and let them do it. The kids peeled and chopped onions and garlic while some sliced bananas then cooked them as well as eggs by taking turns. While cooking was on-going, the kids plated the rice and set the dining table. Teachers of Open Hands School guided the PWAs in the kitchen work.

Chef Waya Araos-Wijangco, Directress of the Open Hand School of Applied Arts, led the parents and guardians is a roundtable discussion on their plans for their kids. Chef Waya inspired parents to prepare their children with autism for an independent life despite, or with the help of, their exceptionalities.

George and Angie Sandiego, doting parents of Chef Dacki, were present to share their experiences in finding a vocation for their son.

The event would not have been possible had it not been for the preparation of parent advocates Al Peña, Evelyn Go, Peng So and Mona Veluz.
