The Autism Society Philippines, Best Buddies Philippines, and the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines work as independent entities towards building a society that will accept, accommodate and appreciate persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities. We are grateful for the many responsible media organizations and personalities who amplify our message through their own spheres of influence for a compassionate world.
Together, we strongly condemn the mimicry of individuals with autism and other developmental or intellectual disabilities on social media for entertainment. Primarily released for public amusement, these memes earn social media virality and visibility; but do little to raise genuine understanding. It reinforces stereotypes, marked with exaggerated interactions and movement; and poor judgement; and become the root of bullying and discrimination documented at the grassroots.
We enjoin entertainment organizations and personalities to take a stronger stand against subtle ridicule. We encourage disability, student and human rights groups to echo messages of unity against everyday discrimination.
