Beyond Pixels, Beyond Borders

By Thea Ann Cayaban, ASP Rosales Chapter

Finally the long wait is over. The Municipality of Rosales, Stimulation and Therapeutic Activity Center – Rosales (STAC-15) and ASP Rosales Chapter are now Part of Photography with a Difference (PWD): An Advocacy Touching Lives Through Photography. This all happened last 19 August 2011 wherein 32 families with children with disabilities (CWD) were gathered to do the activity with the volunteer photographers from Pangasinan and Tarlac namely Pangasinan Wedding Photographers Association (PWPA) and Pangasinan Photographers Club (PaPhoC) as well as Litratista de Tarlac. The venue was held at the tallest dam in Asia, San Roque Multi-Purpose Dam, located at Brgy. San Roque, San Manuel, Pangasinan. This event was made possible through the support of SM City Rosales and Photography with a Difference (PWD) group headed by Mr. John K. Chua.

This activity entitled, “Beyond Pixels, Beyond Borders,” reminded the CWDs that there are no boundaries for them to experience fun and laughter with their families despite of their disabilities. The kids also experienced handling small point and shoot cameras to big professional cameras wherein the enthusiastic photographers share it to them without any hesitation. The photographers also captured their wonderful moments together with their families.

Lucky we are that this event was attended by ASP National President Mary Grace Adviento, ASP Vice President Peng So, Chairman-PWD Commitee and VP for Operations SM Supermalls, Engr. Bien Mateo , the Regional Operations Manager Mr. Cesar P. Bondoc, SM City Rosales Mall Manager Engr. Jersey Y. Mendoza and and Assistant Mall Manager Ms. Catherine R. Garcia as they joined the kids during the visit to the third tallest dam in asia. The participants had also the chance to have an encounter with the giant tilapia, had some parlor games, and kite flying activity. Though the rain poured, the fun never stopped when the SM City Rosales heads and the Pangasinan Wedding Photographers Association had a chance to have a gift giving activity to the CWDs. Indeed, it was really a fun day for everyone!

Blessed Singleness

By: Tiffany Tan, ASP Board Secretary

As Gabby was refilling his glass with water from the cooler, some ladies were swarming over him with questions like “Do you have a girl friend?”, “How is your love life?” “Have you ever been heartbroken?” Gabby Atienza is after all, one of the most eligible bachelors in the autism community.

Gabby took part in the special screening of HBO’s “Temple Grandin” biopic together with ASP National and Chapter representatives, held at Quality Life Discoveries, August 23, 2011. He also served as one of the panelists during the media interview.
The Panelist: HBO Asia’s Senior Executive of Communications Ms. Angela Poh,
PWA JR Tan, PWA Gabby Atienza, ASP Chair Emeritus Dang Koe
and Dr. Tippy Tanchanco, Developmental Pediatrician

The Temple Grandin Biopic premiers on September 2, 2011 (Friday) 10pm on HBO Asia and HBO HD on Channel 54 on Sky Cable and Channel 39 on Destiny Cable.

“My brothers and sisters are married….and I cannot commit (to a relationship), so why can’t I be an exception?” reasoned Gabby candidly. “Life is about moving on….and we have to find our reason to live… There are plenty of other reasons for us to live.”

Gabby moves on to talk about the movie. “This movie of Temple Grandin has taught us not to be too quick to dismiss ideas that are supposedly crazy- like her hug machine invention. Einstein was taught to be crazy at one point in his life, also John Nash, the Nobel Prize winner.”

“Also, vegetarians might not agree with this film, but this is about Temple’s gift of kindness to animals. This is her gift to humanity.” Temple Grandin, portrayed by Claire Danes, is a doctor of animal science and a consultant to livestock industry, promoting humane livestock handling processes. Numerous books on the subject are to her credit.

When asked what his favorite scenes in the movie were, “It’s the anxiety of Temple’s mother whether her daughter will make a fool of herself in school. But in the end, Temple made a ‘name’ for herself.”

Other scenes that also caught Gabby’s attention were the CGI (computer generated imagery). “The drawings of the surrealistic images and concepts from Temple’s mind posed a real challenge to the film makers.” Gabby is also passionate special effects in movies, particularly those of George Lucas and Pixar. He is currently working on his new comic book “The Adventures of Deputy Dodgers,” evolves from his sketches to digitally enhanced drawings, courtesy of computer technology. Some of these are posted in his Facebook site.

His first work, “My Life as a Comic Book” published in 2009, which documents his life from childhood and coming to terms with his Aspergers diagnosis at the age of 48. Click here to read more. Gabby now works as an in-house artist for Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) in Paranaque City.

When asked again about what his advice would be for those who are still searching for their soul mates or for those who are heartbroken, he looked down on his empty glass, paused for a few minutes and said, “This is a difficult question.”

“Experiencing hardship is given, but the challenge is recovering and being able to sleep after experiencing hardship. Then, wake up with a renewed meaning. Acceptance is the key. I am now ‘single-blessed’. The Pope is not married, his line ends with him. My line ends with me, but this is not a reason to despair. At least people will be reminded of my name and my legacy.”

And so, Gabby, what IS your legacy? “My art and being a middle-aged autistic.”

Gabby Atienza is currently working on his new comic book “The Adventures of Deputy Dodgers”. For more information log on to Gabriel de Jesus Atienza’s Facebook site.

PWA’s Day Off

By: PWA David Michael C. Lopez, ASP Laguna Chapter

Tuesday, August 23 I commuted alone from Los Baños to Quezon City for the special advanced screening of Temple Grandin, made possible with the joint efforts of HBO (Home Box Office) Asia and the Autism Society Philippines. The movie will be shown in HBO Asia and HBO Signature on September 2 at 10:00 pm.

I did not have a hard time riding a bus to the venue, Quality Life Discoveries (QLD), because traffic was not heavy. I arrived at exactly 10:00 a.m. But my routine was shattered for a while, as I missed my working routine at Saint Therese of the Child Jesus Parish Office. Ms. Cathy Lopez, one of the staff from the Autism Resource Center based in Laguna, invited me to the special screening but we travelled separately with the same objective of reaching the said destination.

There was a short tour of the QLD facility and I observed rooms which comprised of the multi-sensory environment, sensory integration, gymnasium, pool, and early intervention. In those areas, individuals with autism, and other children with disability, take part in recreational activities such as swimming and physical education. I took photographs of various apparatus which are used by regular clients.
Quality Life Discoveries

One of the rooms that provide state-of-the-art facilities is the Multi-Sensory Environment. It offers stimulation to all body senses which include sight, smell, hearing, and touch for which they get used into aromas, lights, music, and tangible objects. Aquatherapy is an example of an effective program where it offers exercise opportunities through an individualized or group aquatic fitness or therapy program.

After watching the film, there was open forum wherein guests headed by ASP Chair Emeritus Dang Koe, presented a primer on autism and how it affects the family members. The panel shared thoughts on the movie and explained further the significance of autism in our lives. I also posed for pictures before and after the movie was screened. Click here to read my report about Temple Grandin.

I had lunch where I ate such meals as tilapia and pancit bihon complete with iced tea, prepared courtesy of persons with autism from Independent Living and Learning Center (ILLC) in Mandaluyong. Before I went home to Los Baños, I received tokens – a computer mouse and a towel courtesy of HBO Asia.

It was such a pleasure to meet the people and become part in this one-day special event because I mingled with some people for a while to share my own thoughts on autism.
PWAs: Gabby Atienza, JR Tan and David Michael Lopez

I joined alongside Ms. Cathy Lopez and commuted by bus from Cubao, Quezon City to Barangay Turbina and from Barangay Real in Calamba to Crossing Los Baños, which is part of Barangay Batong Malake.

Queen in Temple

By: PWA David Michael C. Lopez, ASP Laguna Chapter

The HBO Movie Temple Grandin is actually based on a true story of Dr. Temple Grandin, an autistic woman who conquered the limitations forced on her by her condition. Temple was born on August 29, 1947 and did not speak until age four. She suffered problems until high school, particularly in communicating with other people. Her mother was very compassionate just like some of her teachers.

The title role of Temple was played by Claire Danes. She showed such symptoms as attachment to objects, particularly the machine for which she uses when she is alone at her room. In real life, Dr. Grandin is renowned for constructing the revolutionary hug machine, which is used for calming hypersensitive persons. Her invention is familiar today as a way of alleviating stress among persons with autism.

She became interested in cattle as a teen, while allotting time at her aunt’s ranch. The movie shows her love of animals, which led her to become a specialist in the field of animal husbandry. Her hardships paved the road to college education with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Franklin Pierce University (1970) with an MS in Animal Science from Arizona State University (1975).

Embarking on a new chapter of employment, Temple is currently a professor at Colorado State University. Her compassionate design for the treatment of cattle earned her a deserving award from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in 2004. She is also a bestselling author and mentor to the livestock business on animal behavior.

Temple is also extensively well-known for her work in autism advocacy and is listed in the 2010 Time 100 list of the 100 most influential people in the world in the category “Heroes”. Click here to find out more.

The HBO movie was released in 2010 where it garnered 15 Emmy nominations nominated and earned five awards, including Outstanding Made for Television Movie and Best Actress in a Drama for Claire Danes. The movie also co-stars David Strathairn, Catherine O-Hara, and Julia Ormond. Temple was on stage as the award was accepted, and spoke briefly on the microphone to the audience. Coincidentally, the 2010 Emmy Awards happened on Temple’s birthday which took place on August 29.

The movie Temple Grandin will be shown on September 2, 2011 at 10:00 pm on HBO, HBO HD and HBO Signature.
