ASP Diliman brings "au-some" Christmas cheer

ASP Diliman, for the 3rd year now, held caroling activitis in Christmas 2015. The teens and parents braved the holiday traffic of Metro Manila to give yuletide cheers to their co-parents, government workers, university students and golfers.

ASP Diliman PWAs singing with piano music

The ASP Diliman carollers were Vincent Benoza, Andrei Gaban, Ishihara Mojica, Marcus Palomares, Ruel Pascual, Thannielle Tan and Rupert Valera. They started practicing early November to fine-tune their repertoire of Christmas songs that included: O Come all ye Faithful, Hark the Herald, The First Noel, Christmas in our Hearts. Vincent had a solo rendition of “What a Wonderful World” with the parents of the carolers; while Marcus was the pianist. The Dilliman caroling group sang to the homes of their co-parents and relatives, to the President and employees of National Power Corp and to the Education college students of UP-Diliman.

The Diliman teens look forward to caroling every Christmas time. These teens are always eager to come to week-end practices as it means seeing their friends and bonding with their Moms and their friends’ moms. They were not at all intimidated with the wide variety of audience they had to face; instead they all feel proud and confident every after performance. Although they do not care much on the money they received, they all look forward to the yummy meals that were served every time they finished their singing. For the parents, there is no greater feeling than to give this experience to their kids with autism... for after all they may be different but not less.

About the author: Josephine Palomares has long been the face of autism advocacy for ASP Diliman chapter. After serving as the President of the chapter for multiple terms, she continues to serve the disability community as she leads the Kaakibat ng ASP Quezon City Credit Cooperative; and contributes as an active member of the Association for Adults with Autism. She owns and personally manages a thriving model airplane export business in Bulacan. Her son Macky is on the spectrum.

Designing the 2016 Angels Walk for Autism Icon Tshirt

“Whose artwork would be most suitable to put in the Angels’ Walk for Autism 2016 shirt and posters than those of actual angels themselves?” This was the sentiment of Bridges Foundation’s teachers when ASP sought their help for the shirt design. The idea was to pattern the shirt design on the universally popular Beatles street walk on Abbey Road album cover.

To motivate the adolescent artists towards the goal, they were oriented about the event, shown actual videos and photos of the walks from previous Angels’ Walks. Then, they were made to interpret and render their own versions of people walking given an array of assorted pictures to choose from. They were later shown pictures of varied angels’ wings to make and attach to their figures. Among the black and white angels drawn, four in particular were hand-picked to compose the “angels” on a pedestrian walk.

The layout and composition of the design was done by Art Paguia. The angels, (respectively from left to right) were drawn by PWAs Kim Austria, Vernice Prado, Javee Fua and Kobie Trambulo. Indeed, this year’s Angels’ Walk shirt design fleshes out ASP’s commitment “to empower persons with autism spectrum disorder to become, to the best of their potentials, self-reliant, productive and socially accepted members of the community.”

The 2016 Angels Walk For Autism Icon Tshirt

Every year, since 2007, the Angels Walk for Autism has released tshirts for walk participants to use. In the early years, the shirts were text-heavy and promoted the Autism Society Philippines contact numbers in front that can be seen across a crowded room.

With the Angels Walk's growing popularity, the tshirt design has transformed from being a promotional shirt to being a valued collector's item. Individuals with autism and their families wear the Angels Walk shirts all year round, especially since the message of the shirt is enough to draw compassion and understanding without need for words.

Angels on the shirts were drawn by PWA artists Kim Austria, Vernice Prado, Javee Fua and Kobie Trambulo. Aside from a tasteful design, the shirts will be made available at the reasonable price of P150 each, regardless of size.

Q&A with Autism Experts - November 2015

"It takes a village to raise a child." This African proverb rings louder for children with autism. The Autism Society Philippines believes that parents should build relationships with a professional compassionate support team who can advise and counsel them, in addressing the myriad of questions they have about raising a child on the spectrum.

"If you have met someone with autism, you have met ONE person with autism." There is no substitute for personal consultations with professionals, which consider traits and behaviors unique to the individual with autism.

As ASP continues to receive questions from parents and family members year-round, we have reached out to the following experts to help answer some concerns on health, education and intervention.

My 11 years old son with mild autism, a grade 4 student po sa regular school ay biglang ayaw ng pumasok sa school. --- Leilani T.

At age 11, your son is entering the adolescent stage where hormonal changes can make a person's behaviors erratic and make self-regulation more difficult. I would agree with the Developmental Pediatrician's recommendation that it may be better to ease off on the academic pressures at this point and focus on development of social skills, skills along your son's area(s) of interest, and functional vocational, daily living skills. If there is a progressive school in your area willing to make accommodations for his needs then that would be a much better option than stopping school altogether. This is a crucial period where he needs the most guidance rather than more idle time where he learns nothing.

My son is now 4 years old, he has ASD and we already did the OT and ST, since he’s now in school, the problem now is he is easily get irritated when we trying to stop him from what he is doing, also sometimes can hurt his classmate and usually lay on the floor and do tantrums. What therapy do you recommend? His teacher told us to do ABA, will this help him improve? --- Vivian L.

Just because child is now in school, it does not mean he no longer needs OT & Speech therapy. Applied behavior analysis/ behavior modification techniques will certainly help especially when strategy is consistently implemented by all persons (especially parents & caregivers) and in all environments the child is in.

How effective and how does GFCF diet help a child with autism? I’ve read a lot about it but my son's Developmental Pediatrician did not recommend it as according to her it might limit the nutrition my son can get from a normal diet. I also asked his occupational therapist about it and she said its effect varies depending on the patient. She has a patient who has acted good with the diet but there are also some who showed frequent tantrums after starting the diet. --- Celina DG.

Defer to devped recommendations. GFCF is not for everyone. There are criteria which could indicate child would benefit from GFCF. Perhaps child does not have these indicators.
